Elon Musk has been appointed as the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Officer at Disney. The announcement was made by Musk himself on social media.
What Happened: Today, Musk took to his social media platform X to share the news. He expressed his enthusiasm for the new role and plans to work with Disney’s top executives to make the company’s content “MORE woke!”
“Even the linguini,” Musk added in an X post.
Musk’s announcement on Apr 1 coincides with the tradition of April Fools’ Day, an annual event marked by practical jokes and hoaxes. The custom, observed on the first day of April, sees jokesters revealing their actions by exclaiming, “April Fools!” Mass media often participate in these pranks, and their true nature is typically exposed the following day.
Disney has not yet made an official statement regarding Musk’s appointment.
Why It Matters: This unexpected move comes after a series of public disputes between Musk and Disney. Earlier this year, Musk accused Disney of “institutional racism and sexism” and suggested that Walt Disney himself would “despise” Disney’s current CEO, Bob Iger, amid a controversy over the company’s ‘Inclusions Standards’ memo. This led to a public feud between Musk and Iger, with the Tesla CEO even involving the Star Wars franchise.
Disney’s decision to appoint Musk as its Chief DEI Officer could be seen as an attempt to address the issues raised by Musk and to bring about a change in the company’s content and culture.
