Some five years ago, I started watching Korean dramas. Actually, the first Korean drama I watched was "Dae Jang Geum," but that was when I was in school. So, I started religiously exploring the K-drama world only a few years ago.
Not unlike many of you, I also thought K-dramas were nothing more than mushy teenage romances. Don't get me wrong, there are some pretty good teen dramas, but I wanted to explore thrillers, horror, and maybe a bit of fantasy fiction with an undercurrent of historical panache.
So, I started with ‘Mr. Sunshine’ and haven’t looked back. Here are five Netflix K-dramas I recommend that will change your perception of these still under-appreciated gems:
Mr. Sunshine: Brilliant Character Development, Acting Prowess And Storyline
The show transports you back to the early 19th century against the backdrop of Korea's tumultuous history, which included slavery. It has everything: heartbreaking romance, but not too much that it gets soppy, and the ultimate battle of the protagonist between choosing the country he was born into and the one which adopted him.
Stranger: Because Chemistry Doesn't Happen Between Romantic Couples Only
If you’re into investigative thrillers, this show features an uptight but fair and witty prosecutor who lacks empathy, paired with a detective who will keep you on the edge of your seat. The non-romantic chemistry between the two is more electrifying than many reel and real couples. The best part is, I never had to skip any scene, even for 10 seconds, because the pace was great. While the storyline is somewhat predictable, you’ll still find some twists and turns.

Kingdom: Who Said Only Americans Can Rule The Zombie World
Set against the backdrop of ancient Korea, this historical horror series combines the epic scale of a period drama with thrilling zombie action, making it a must-watch for movie buffs. It’s like the Korean version of ‘Game of Thrones’ meets ‘The Walking Dead’ — an absolute binge-worthy treat.
Reply 1988: Need A Break From Heavy Lifting Dramas, Just Watch This
While romance is present, it’s not the main focus of this show. It’s a heartwarming series that delves into teenage friendships and portrays imperfect parents with good intentions. Essentially, it’s a nostalgic gift wrapped in layers of friendship and family dynamics, which resonates with many, especially in Asian cultures.
Itaewon Class: Revenge Is A Dish Best Served With A Side Of Entrepreneurship
If done right, revenge dramas are usually sweet picks, and this one was done right, although at times it may feel a bit stretched. It's a story about an ex-convict setting up his dream restaurant on the busy streets of Itaewon, challenging major corporations along the way. Bonus: The background music will pump you up.
Miscellaneous: Because These Five Dramas Are Just Tip Of The Iceberg
Apart from the aforementioned K-dramas, if you are into fantasy-fiction, I would also recommend “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” and “Alchemy of Souls.” If you like period drama but with loads of laughter, try “Mr. Queen.” Want to try something truly mind-boggling but also relatable try “Hellbound.”
