I still can't get enough of the world George R.R. Martin created, so I am not shy when peppering my daily conversations with some quotes from Game of Thrones.
Now that my conversation is littered with GOT quotes, even my family has taken to responding to me with "Valar Dohaeris" (sometimes). Here's my treasure trove of 10 unforgettable GOT quotes because I’m a bit dramatic like that:
Winter Is Coming: House Stark
The ultimate classic. Even if you haven't watched the show and read the books, it is fairly easy to come across a meme related to this. I use it to define literal snowstorms or just foreseeable tough times as it sets the perfect ominous tone. Before the winter, it is a great excuse to stock up on cozy blankets and marshmallows.
A Lannister Always Pays His Debts: House Lannister
First of all, it's not just about the money, although you can use it in money-related situations. It's a reminder to always honor the promises you make and never forget any favor owed. Also, it adds a touch of sophistication to any "I owe you" situation.
When You Play The Game Of Thrones, You Win Or You Die: Cersei Lannister
Okay, maybe it is not the fit to use in your everyday life. Although, I have tried it in jest before, but it didn't really land. Having said that, it's a powerful reminder that life as we know it is a bit like a high-stakes chess match sometimes, and you can't really win until you are fully committed.
Valar Morghulis And Valar Dohaeris: A Manner Of Greeting
“Valar Morghulis” means "all men must die" while its response, "Valar Dohaeris" means "all men must serve." Although it is not the happiest way to greet someone, it does have a ring of mystery to it. I use it for skipping out on boring formal ways of greeting, but it can also serve as a reminder for seizing the day and making the most of every moment.
Dracarys: The Last Words That Burned King's Landing
This one is actually a one-word wonder. While in the GOT world, Daenerys Targaryen's closest friend and aid Missandei uttered this as her last word after which the Dragon queen went berserk, in reality, you can use it to signal that it's time to bring out the big guns. However, please don't actually set anything on fire.
That's What I Do, I Drink And I Know Things: Tyrion Lannister
It's one of my favorite quotes, even though I might not be half as intelligent as "Hand of the King" and later "Hand of the Queen." This is the perfect statement for when you are feeling particularly clever (or just in the mood for a bottle or two of cold beer).
The Night Is Dark And Full Of Terrors: Melisandre
If there was any line in the series that accurately depicted moments when things seem a bit bleak – this is it. Also, this quote adds a sprinkle of melodrama, both fitting and frightening. I usually use it to convey my feelings when the deadline is in the morning and I still have work pending. And to sympathize with my brother the night before his exam.
You Know Nothing, Jon Snow: Ygritte
This timeless dialogue that Ygritte somewhat lovingly says can be used to school someone in a trivial pursuit or to gently nudge a friend about their blind spot. Moreover, this quote never fails to deliver a playful jab when you want to win over a discussion, but don't have enough arguments to make.
Hold The Door: Hodor
This one is a bit of a tearjerker, but also a poignant reminder of the sacrifice and loyalty Hodor shows toward House Stark. However, you can use it to literally ask someone to “hold the door.” I once used it at an elevator when I was trying to get there on time, but was just a teeny-tiny bit later. Thankfully the woman inside was also a GOT buff, and loved the playful remark.
The Things I Do For Love: Jaimie Lannister
This infamous sentence isn't for the faint of heart. Just kidding. This quote might have a macabre background, but you can use it in a light-hearted manner. After all, love does make us do crazy things, right?
