Disney D23 Lineup Announced: Could August Event Act As Catalyst For Stock?

Zinger Key Points
  • Disney hosts its biennial D23 fan expo next month, which will highlight upcoming shows and movies.
  • The event comes as Disney is seeing box office success and has some upcoming events that could excited shareholders.

Media giant Walt Disney Co DIS will host its biennial D23 fan event in August. An initial schedule and lineup shows which movies, shows and content will be highlighted, providing a potential catalyst for the stock.

What Happened: On the heels of the box office hit "Inside Out 2," Disney will have its D23 event Aug. 9-11. For the first time, portions of the event will be streamed on the Disney+ platform during the three days of the event.

The event will feature three "marquee showcases" covering Disney Entertainment, Disney Experiences and Disney Legends, according to a report from Deadline.

Disney said this year's event will "bring bigger shows with more magic to the biggest audience of Disney fans in the world." The event will also feature shopping experiences through a new interactive app during presentations, which could be a way for Disney to highlight its consumer products segment.

The Disney Entertainment Showcase on Aug. 9 will look at movies, series and shows across the company's library. This is set to include upcoming content with a promise of "exclusive new content coming to the big screen, to smaller screens, and to the stage."

The Disney Experiences presentation on Aug. 10 will highlight the Disney Parks and Experiences segment with announcements and a look at what's set for the company's future.

The Disney Legends event on Aug. 11 will highlight the induction of the Disney Legends 2024 Class, which includes James Brooks, James Cameron, Miley Cyrus, Jamie Lee Curtis, Harrison Ford, John Williams, Frank Oz and others. Ryan Seacrest will host the event.

Disney will highlight upcoming future Disney+ shows during the event including "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" and "Eyes of Wakanda."

Another event will highlight the company's ABC TV segment with a celebration of 20 years of "Grey's Anatomy," the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history. The Backlot Stage will also focus on the award-winning sitcom "Abbott Elementary."

The upcoming "Moana 2" and "Zootopia 2" films will be part of panels for the company's Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios Stage.

Why It's Important: The surprise guests and presentations can often include movie trailers, show trailers and a look-ahead at highly anticipated content from Disney's key franchises like Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and more.

For Disney shareholders, the event could act as a catalyst that accompanies several recent and upcoming potential positives for the media company.

The box office success for "Inside Out 2" is a positive for Disney ahead of the highly anticipated "Deadpool & Wolverine" release on July 26 with Disney looking to bounce back on their 2023 underperformance at the box office.

Disney is expected to release third-quarter financial results in August, which could put the key event either before or after the D23 event.

The media company also premiered a trailer for the upcoming Marvel film "Captain America: Brave New World" on Friday. The movie is scheduled for a Feb. 14, 2025 theatrical release and is one of several Marvel movies expected to be released in 2025.

DIS Price Action: Disney shares trade at $97.33 versus a 52-week trading range of $78.73 to $123.74. Disney stock is up 8% year-to-date in 2024.
