Netflix Reveals Squid Game Video Game With 32-Player Party Royale Mode: 'Can You Make It Through Playtime Alive?'

Zinger Key Points
  • Hit streaming franchise "Squid Game" is getting a video game from Netflix soon.
  • The new video game includes a 32-person battle royale challenge to compete against friends or others online.

Fans of Netflix NFLX original series "Squid Game" will soon have a video game to celebrate the hit 2021 show ahead of a highly-anticipated second season.

What Happened: Netflix teased it was releasing a multiplayer "Squid Game" when it reported second-quarter financial results. Fans got their first look at gameplay with a trailer unveiled Tuesday.

"Management offers a reminder, we're all here to have fun," a voiceover in the trailer says.

The gameplay shows players eliminated throughout while competing in popular "Squid Game" contests and also some new favorite childhood games that look similar to "Floor is Lava" and "Frogger."

"With deadly challenges you'll recognize from ‘Squid Game,' the series, and more games inspired by classic childhood activities, each round is a dark trip down memory lane. Can you make it through playtime alive?" the website reads.

Called a multiplayer battle royale game, the website says you can play with friends (or enemies) online to try and outlast the competition.

"You win some, you die some," a caption reads on screen during the trailer.

"Squid Game: Unleashed" will be available to play soon on the Netflix app according to the trailer, with no set release date announced.

Season 2 of "Squid Game" hits the streaming platform on Dec. 26 with a third and final season coming in 2025.

Why It's Important: The new video game is part of Netflix's strategy of launching its own original games based on its intellectual property along with other acquired and licensed titles. Netflix is releasing game versions of several hit shows in 2024 to coincide with their release or a new season hitting the streaming platform.

Netflix plans on releasing a new game every month going forward.

Also unveiled at Gamescom by Netflix was a new game called "Monument Valley 3," as reported by Variety.

The game comes to Netflix on Dec. 10 and is the first new title in the well-known franchise in over a decade.

The first season of “Squid Game” shattered streaming records and is the most viewed Netflix series based on minutes in its first 28 days of release.

Viewers watched 1.65 billion hours of “Squid Game” in its first 28 days of release, with 142 million households watching the series, according to the company.

The hit series became a pop culture phenomenon, won awards and saw a reality competition launched by MrBeast on YouTube and later by Netflix.

“Squid Game” hit number one in 94 countries for Netflix and later hit the top 10 once again in late 2023 when the reality series was launched.

NFLX Price Action: Netflix shares trade at $699.69 on Wednesday versus a 52-week trading range of $344.73 to $711.33. Netflix stock is up 43.5% year-to-date in 2024.
