Elon Musk and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) shared some marijuana mirth recently on the latter's podcast, in which they pondered whether smoking weed on the air might boost viewership. "But I was pretty sure it might cause a scandal if we smoked pot," Cruz said.
In an episode of "Verdict with Ted Cruz," the senator said he asked one of the producers prior to the interview, "Should I show up and pull out a joint?" and whether, in doing so, they'd get more views than the time Musk famously lit up on Joe Rogan's podcast in 2018.
During the Cruz podcast, first reported by Marijuana Moment, the senator was discussing his age when Musk piped up that he was born "69 days after April 20," also known as 4/20, the widely celebrated cannabis holiday. Was Musk cleverly mixing a provocative innuendo with a weed reference or just reminding followers not to forget his special day?
Those Were The Days My Friends
Musk, an adamant supporter of President Donald Trump and head of the administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), now backs mandatory drug testing for federal employees, which could assist his efforts to reduce the federal workforce.
Speaking Of Scandals
Cruz's joke about causing a scandal brought to mind the near meltdown that followed Musk's seemingly carefree on-air smoke session with Rogan.
"I did get a lot of backlash," Musk said on a podcast afterward. "I had to have random drug tests and stuff after that to prove that I'm not a drug addict.”
Musk, CEO of Tesla, said he was drug tested for "everything."
"The consequences for me and SpaceX were actually not good," Musk said then, adding that the entire company had to undergo random drug tests afterward. Not long after, NASA launched an investigation into SpaceX's "culture" and "adherence to a drug-free environment."
Cruz And Cannabis? Musk?
Cruz, meanwhile, is no friend of cannabis, despite his joking. Cruz condemned the Biden administration's efforts to reclassify cannabis under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) from Schedule I to Schedule III.
And Musk? Who knows? With 4/20 just one month away, no doubt something will inspire him. We’ll keep you posted.
