Chinese tech conglomerate Tencent Holdings ADR TCEHY announced its acquisition of Techland, a prominent Polish game development studio known for creating the original Dead Island and the Dying Light series.
Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka revealed the news in a blog post, stating that Tencent is in the process of becoming the majority shareholder in the studio.

"Teaming up with Tencent will allow us to move full speed ahead with the execution of the vision for our games," the CEO said. "We have chosen an ally who has already partnered with some of the world's finest video game companies and helped them reach new heights while respecting their ways of doing things."
Despite Tencent's majority ownership, Marchewka assured that Techland will maintain full ownership of its intellectual properties and retain creative independence, continuing to operate as an autonomous entity.
In 2022, Tencent embarked on an ambitious spending spree, acquiring several prominent game development companies.
Among its notable purchases were Sumo Group, the studio known for creating Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Wake Up Interactive. Adding to its growing gaming portfolio, Tencent also revealed its intention to buy Turtle Rock Studios, the developers behind hit titles like Back 4 Blood and Left 4 Dead, according to IGN.
