Microsoft Corporation MSFT Starfield emerged In September 2023 as the best-selling game in the U.S., outperforming Warner Bros. Discovery Inc's WBD Mortal Kombat 1.
According to data from Circana, Starfield achieved this feat despite being available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, implying a substantial player base not counted in traditional sales figures.

Starfield launched on PC and Xbox Series X/S on Sept. 6, while Mortal Kombat 1 released on Sept. 19 for various platforms.
Meanwhile, Electronic Arts Inc's EA EA Sports FC 24 secured the third position in September's rankings, followed by Madden NFL 24 at fourth place and Starbreeze AB's Payday 3 at fifth.
Notably, Mortal Kombat 1's dollar sales were comparable to Mortal Kombat 11's figures from April 2019. Mortal Kombat 1 claimed the top spot for PlayStation, ranked second on Xbox and PC, and third on the Nintendo Switch. Starfield dominated the Xbox and PC sales charts as expected.
Circana's report revealed Starfield now stands as the seventh-best-selling game of 2023, with Mortal Kombat 1 following closely at eighth place. The best-selling game of the year thus far is Hogwarts Legacy with Nintendo ADR's NTDOY The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in the second position.
In other findings, PlayStation 5 maintained its lead in both unit and dollar sales, while Xbox Series X/S secured the second position.
U.S. consumers spent a total of $4.5 billion on video games in September 2023, marking a 10% increase from the previous year.
