Sony Building New Studio With Deviation Games Ex-Employees: Report

Zinger Key Points
  • Sony is reportedly considering forming a new in-house studio with ex-Deviation Games talent.
  • Key figures hint at potential contributions, including Jason Blundell from Call of Duty.

Sony Group Corp. SONY is considering the formation of a new in-house studio comprised of former members of Deviation Games, sparking speculation within the gaming community.

According to Insider Gaming, the rumor arose when Twitter user @Zuby_Tech noticed updates in job descriptions of ex-Deviation Games staff, notably Fred Thompson leading design for an undisclosed project. While no project specifics were disclosed, the move hints at potential developments.

Further indications emerged when game designer JCBackfire disclosed their current affiliation with Jason Blundell, a co-founder of Deviation Games who departed in 2022.

Blundell, recognized for contributions to the Call of Duty series, particularly in Campaign and Zombie modes, could be a significant addition to Sony's team.

Despite Deviation Games announcing Blundell's departure without explanation in September 2022, his industry influence remains acknowledged.

This potential amalgamation of talent from Deviation Games could enable Sony to form a team akin to the one previously present at the now-struggling studio.

Deviation Games faced substantial layoffs in 2023, releasing around 90 employees without an official statement.

Sony is reportedly planning further layoffs, including at Insomniac Games, following a recent hack.

The emergence of a new internal studio at Sony, while presently only a rumor, holds promise due to the availability of established talent from Deviation Games.
