Popular third-party game store Steam has announced it will cease support for older versions of Windows, impacting a small portion of its users.
What Happened: Steam has ended support for Microsoft Corp.’s MSFT Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. This move is expected to cause minimal disruption as a whopping 95.57 percent of Steam’s user base is currently using Windows 10 and Windows 11.
The older Windows versions are used by less than 1% of Steam users, while around 2 percent use Linux and 1.5 percent are on Mac.
Why It Matters: Steam’s decision to halt support for the older Windows and MacOS versions aligns with its strategy to focus on the platforms used by the majority of its users. This move follows a previous announcement by Steam to end support for certain macOS versions.
The report mentioned that Valve, the creator of Steam, would cease support for macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and 10.14 (Mojave) starting Feb. 15, 2024. Post this, users on these operating systems will not receive any updates, including crucial security ones, and will not be eligible for technical assistance.
The minimal user base affected by these changes will unlikely impact Steam’s overall operations and performance. However, it’s time to consider an upgrade for those users still operating on these older versions.
