GTA 5 Surpasses 200 Million Copies Sold: Only Two Games Have Outsold It

Zinger Key Points
  • Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 200 million copies in 11 years, Take-Two Interactive announced in an earnings report.
  • GTA 5’s incredible sales have made it one of the best-selling games ever, surpassing big titles like Wii Sports (82 million copies).

Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5), a game that’s been around for 11 years and released on three generations of consoles, has hit a huge milestone: over 200 million copies sold.

This news came from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc‘s TTWO recent earnings report, spotted by IGN. For years, GTA 5 has been selling about five million copies every three months, thanks in large part to the success of GTA Online.

The same report mentioned that Red Dead Redemption 2, another Rockstar game, has sold 64 million units worldwide in its six years.

GTA 5's incredible sales have made it one of the best-selling games ever, surpassing big titles like Wii Sports (82 million copies) and PUBG (75 million copies). Even Red Dead Redemption 2’s impressive numbers seem small in comparison.

Tetris and Microsoft Corp.‘s MSFT Minecraft are the only games that have sold more than GTA 5. As of October 2023, Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies across many platforms. Tetris still holds the top spot, with over 520 million copies sold, including 425 million mobile downloads and 35 million on the Game Boy.

With GTA 6 set to release in 2025, there's some speculation about whether GTA 5's sales will finally slow down. But until then, GTA 5 continues to sell impressively, maintaining its status as a gaming phenomenon.
