Sony Group Corp. SONY is enhancing its Discord integration on the PS5, allowing users to join voice calls directly from the console.
Previously, PS5 users had to transfer a Discord call from a mobile or PC app to their console.
The new update integrates Discord directly into the PS5 dashboard, enabling users to select servers or DM groups and join voice channels without extra devices.
The update will be rolled out gradually over the next few weeks, starting in Japan and Asia, followed by Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, and finally the U.S. and Canada.
To access this feature, users need to update their PS5 to the latest system software. They also must link their PlayStation Network account to their Discord account.
Users can join Discord voice chats by selecting the Discord tab in Game Base within the PS5 Control Center, choosing a server or DM group, and then selecting a voice channel. Details such as who is already in the channel will be visible. Additionally, PS5 users will receive console notifications for incoming Discord calls, allowing them to join immediately.
Microsoft Corp. MSFT introduced Discord support for Xbox in July 2022. An improved version followed without needing a phone in November 2022. This also included the ability to stream gameplay to friends.
Alongside the Discord improvements, Sony is introducing a feature to share PlayStation Network profiles via any messaging or social app. This feature, available next week in the PlayStation mobile app, will generate a shareable link or QR code. This will likely make it easier for others to add users as friends.
