Starting today, the program will begin winding down, with a complete shutdown scheduled for Oct. 15, 2024. Ambassadors have until that date to claim any remaining rewards and codes.

The Xbox Ambassadors initiative was designed to promote inclusivity, safety, and fun within the gaming community.
While participants were not Microsoft employees, they played a vital role in representing the Xbox brand. To qualify, Ambassadors needed to meet certain requirements, such as maintaining a minimum Gamerscore of 1,500 and being at least 17 years old.
These standout community members were often rewarded with exclusive digital and physical items, editorial spotlights and access to sweepstakes.
“We have learned so much from this passionate group,” Microsoft said in its official announcement. However, the company cited the evolving nature of the Xbox brand as the reason behind the program’s closure, with plans to shift community engagement strategies moving forward.
Changes And New Directions For Xbox Engagement
The company hinted at future plans for expanding its engagement programs, particularly through its Xbox Rewards and Xbox Research initiatives.
“Players are finding more value in engaging with us in other ways that allow them to live our community values of making Xbox a place where everyone can have fun,” Microsoft said in its statement.
This shift will see greater emphasis on other programs like Xbox Fanfest and the Xbox Insider Program, which aim to maintain the community spirit fostered by the Ambassadors.
A Tumultuous Year For Microsoft Gaming
The closure of the Xbox Ambassadors program comes amid a challenging year for Microsoft Gaming. The company, like many others in the gaming industry, has faced waves of layoffs. In January 2024, Xbox cut 1,900 staff, and further reductions followed in May, including the closure of studios like Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks.
Just last week, another 650 staff members were laid off.
