Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us Games Prepped For PS5 Pro With 4K Support

Naughty Dog has rolled out significant updates for The Last of Us Part 1 and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on Sony Group Corp.’s SONY PlayStation 5.

These updates enable support for the highly anticipated PS5 Pro, which launches next month with advanced features like PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for enhanced image clarity and performance.

The latest patch for The Last of Us Part 1, version 2.00, introduces a “Pro” mode that takes full advantage of the PS5 Pro's hardware. This new mode renders the game at 1440p, with PSSR upscaling output to 4K while maintaining a target of 60 frames per second (fps).

Notably, the game retains its existing Performance and Fidelity rendering modes, though both offer a “smoother experience” with higher framerates on the PS5 Pro than on the standard PS5.

While the patch notes detail several other improvements—ranging from fixes to gameplay issues in various chapters to enhancements in accessibility settings—the focus is clearly on performance improvements made possible by the new hardware.

Naughty Dog also issued a similar update for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. Update 1.2.0 brings the same Pro mode, which renders at 1440p and upscales to 4K, again targeting 60fps. Performance and Fidelity modes also remain available for players who want the best balance between visuals and smooth gameplay.

What Makes PS5 Pro Special?

The PS5 Pro introduces several cutting-edge features, notably PSSR, which is an AI-powered upscaling technology. This allows games to achieve higher resolutions without compromising performance.

"The ability to play The Last of Us at 60fps in 4K is a huge deal," Naughty Dog's head of technology, Travis McIntosh, told IGN. "It makes it so we don't have to compromise, so you don't have to pick between high fidelity and good performance."

McIntosh added that while the original PS5’s fidelity mode offers great visuals, the Pro’s enhancements elevate the experience: "The high fidelity mode on the base PS5 actually looks even better when you're on Pro. And there are some minor performance issues in performance mode on the PS5 base model that are also much better. Very solid 60 [fps], a lot less frame drops when you get to the Pro."

These updates reflect a larger trend across the industry, where developers are optimizing their games to take advantage of the PS5 Pro's improved capabilities. Remedy, for example, has detailed its plans for Alan Wake 2, with a similar focus on balancing ray tracing with performance improvements in its PS5 Pro patch.

A Growing List of PS5 Pro Enhanced Games

As the Nov. 7 release date for the PS5 Pro approaches, the list of games optimized for the console continues to grow. The Last of Us games join other major titles like Diablo 4, God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in receiving Pro Enhanced updates. According to reports, over 70 games are expected to have Pro Enhanced versions by launch day, offering players a wide variety of options for making the most of the new console.

At a retail price of $700, the PS5 Pro aims to deliver high-quality gaming experiences without forcing players to choose between performance and visual fidelity.
