As Republicans make moves to reduce federal spending, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is taking a strict stance on Medicaid eligibility.
Over the weekend, Johnson stressed that entitlement programs would be safeguarded for qualified recipients, but urged the removal of those who don't meet the criteria.
What Happened: In a Fox News interview, Johnson argued that the government should "eliminate" people on Medicaid who aren't "actually eligible," referring to "able-bodied workers" and "young men" as examples.
He cautioned that ineligible recipients are "draining the resources" from seniors, disabled persons, and low-income mothers.
Why It Matters: The comments come in the heels of House Republicans' adoption of a budget outline pushing $880 billion in cuts. Medicaid is a possible target, despite resistance from members like Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.), who said she will not back plans that "strip benefits" from vulnerable populations.
With Republicans towing the line between spending cuts and political hazards, Medicaid's future is in the balance and likely to be a crucial issue in the 2026 midterm elections.
