About 75% of the earth is covered in water including the oceans, lakes, and rivers that stretch across its surface. However, only about 2.5% of the water is potable, fresh water.

Of the fresh water available on earth, only 31% is accessible for use, as about 69% of the freshwater is in the form of ice caps and glaciers in places like the Antarctic and Greenland - reducing the quantity of the available drinking water even further, to less than 1%

Since the 1980s, global demand for water has been increasing by about 1% per year due to economic expansion and population growth. This trend is expected to continue until at least 2050 when global water demand will be 20 to 30% higher than it is today according to an OECD report, potentially leaving 40% of the global population in water-stressed regions.

Water scarcity and water crises were among the top risks on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) global list of risks in 2020. The WEF report suggests that an additional investment of $1.7 trillion until 2030 – about three times the current investment levels – is needed to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Transporting water from regions where it is abundant to places where it is scarce is a solution adopted by most nations in order to meet their water needs, but under the current technology of water systems, it may be proving a costly affair to maintain.

Massive Water Pipeline Leaks Coupled With Aging And Corroding Water Infrastrastructure Could Be A Recipe For Disaster

The reason for this – in many parts of the world, including both developed and developing economies, the existing distribution networks are aging, leading to major leakages in the water lines.

U.S. water infrastructure is in desperate need of repair and replacement to improve the resiliency of water networks. The U.S. maintains more than 2.2 million miles of water transmission and distribution mains. In 2020, the average age of water pipes in the U.S. was 45 years old - an increase in average age from 25 years old in 1970.

Each year in the U.S. alone, an estimated 240,000 water main breaks occur, disrupting supply and contaminating drinking water, and it is estimated that the U.S. loses six billion gallons of drinking water every day from leaking pipelines.

Another issue facing domestic water pipelines of today is corrosion, which is a continuous process in pipes made of iron and steel.

In addition to corrosion, tuberculation makes pipes rough on the inside, which can increase pumping costs and the pressure in the distribution system, while decreasing pump efficiency and reducing the amount of water that can be transported. Corrosion control is a costly and ongoing process. According to a study by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers International, the total annual cost of corrosion in 2016, including direct and indirect costs, was estimated at over $2.5 trillion globally

A Revolutionary Way To Manufacture Water Pipes May Be Just The Answer Everyone’s Waiting For

Global Composite Piping Solutions (GCPS), a manufacturer of large-diameter engineered pipelines for water, energy and industrial applications, believes that it may have a sustainable solution to address some of the key problems facing the water industry.

GCPS’ patented composite pipe is reportedly manufactured using innovative technology and combines all the benefits of steel and high-density polyethylene pipes (HDPE) in one solution. The company says it adopts revolutionary technology to manufacture large-diameter high-pressure pipelines using a patented methodology to create a thermoplastic composite pipe obviates the risk of corrosion and leakage – which are the primary issues faced with steel and prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCP)pipelines. GCPS pipes are expected to have a service life of at least twice as long as steel or PCCP pipe.

Other benefits of the GCPS pipe manufacturing technologies include easy installation at a lower cost and leak-free joints. They are lightweight, rustproof, incur significantly reduced maintenance and operating costs, and can withstand harsh chemical environments and high external loads. Their flexible nature also enables them to withstand seismic events unlike steel or concrete pipe.

Designed for increased flow and throughput performance, GCPS’ pipes can be made in a reduced size, saving clients millions of dollars in construction costs, according to the company.

Water capture from alternative sources is becoming necessary in many parts of the world where natural water sources are extremely limited, and desalination is increasingly being attempted in coastal and desert regions including in countries like Saudi Arabia. GCPS believes its technology could have a prominent role to play in desalination projects by making the plants significantly more economical and viable as the costs to maintain the transmission and distribution pipelines would decrease dramatically with GCPS pipelines.

The company has also developed and patented a mobile manufacturing process that allows large-diameter pipelines to be manufactured using a modular design at or near the project site – or even in remote areas – where delivering prefabricated pipes is not feasible, or prohibitively expensive.

This is a desirable capability, as mobile manufacturing plants cause a less adverse impact on the environment by reducing the carbon emissions involved in transporting pipes from a central plant to project locations.

The company says it is targeting multi-billion dollar water infrastructure projects, like the Lake Powell Pipeline (LPP) to utilize its mobile pipe manufacturing technology to deliver its patented ThermoCompositeTM pipe at the project site.

Due to its essential nature, the demand for water will most likely continue to remain consistent despite fluctuations in the economy.

New technologies coupled with strong water infrastructure could be the answer to ensuring that this stressed resource continues to flow into every home across the globe.

With its innovative technology and unique market presence, GCPS believes that it is positioned to positively capitalize on the ever-growing opportunity that the water industry presents and chart a trajectory of success.

GCPS has commenced raising funds through Wefunder and has raised $263,084 from 204 investors so far.
