Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will announce his bid for the 2024 presidential election during a Twitter Spaces discussion with Elon Musk on Wednesday evening.
A report from NBC News, citing three sources familiar with the plans, says the conversation will take place on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET. DeSantis will then begin campaigning and touring through different states after Memorial Day.
According to betting markets, DeSantis is Donald Trump’s closest competitor. Predictit.org currently has Trump’s odds at 57 cents on the dollar, while DeSantis’s odds are at 34 cents on the dollar.
The NBC News report comes one day after Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) announced his bid for the 2024 Republican nomination for the nation’s highest office. Other GOP candidates officially in the race include Asa Hutchinson, Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley. Republican Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin may also throw his hat in the ring.
Many political experts believe that the race will be a two-man showdown between Trump and DeSantis. DeSantis has won over many conservatives through his business-first approach during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Florida Governor has also recently been entangled in a dispute with the Walt Disney Co DIS following the company’s criticism of Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law. Disney recently announced that it will be scrapping its plans for a new billion-dollar campus in Florida.
