Americans are grappling with numerous politically-centered concerns, many of which are likely to emerge as key debate topics in the 2024 elections.

A new poll reveals the top issues Americans believe should be investigated by Congress.

What Happened: The main areas of investigation that U.S. voters want Congress to prioritize include the scrutiny of classified documents from Donald Trump's tenure in office, the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border, and the rise of trafficking of fentanyl.

In a poll from Morning Consult, Americans were asked to rank the top concerns that they believe Congress should address. Here are the issues identified as a "top priority" by the participants:

  • Department of Justice investigating Trump’s classified documents: 34%
  • Effect of COVID-19 lockdowns: 31%

Why It’s Important: The results from the poll show that voters see several issues as “top priorities” that Congress should be addressing.

Among all voters, fentanyl trafficking and the U.S. and Mexico border are the top issues. Fentanyl was the top-ranked item by all voters, Republicans, Democrats and Independent voters. U.S. and Mexico border issues ranked as the second-biggest issue for Independent and Republican voters.

The handling of classified documents by former President Trump was among the top issues from all voters, ranking third overall and a top three issue for Democrats and Independent voters.

Republicans ranked the issue of whether President Biden should be impeached as third highest, with 55% saying it’s a high priority. A potential impeachment of Biden got only 11% of votes from Democrats and 24% from Independent voters.

There was also a stark divide along party lines on the issue of Hunter Biden's finances. While 46% of Republican respondents viewed it as a high priority, only 12% of Democrats shared the same sentiment.
