A new survey from Morning Consult shows that fewer U.S. voters support providing military assistance to Israel since the war with Hamas began in October.
When asked if they support providing military aid to Israel, U.S. voters who answered “yes” are broken down below by the following political party groups (the percent who answered yes in October in parentheses):
- All Voters: 46% (53%)
- Democrats: 47% (52%)
- Republicans: 51% (59%)
- Independents: 36% (46%)
The voters who answered “yes” to supporting the humanitarian aid to Palestinians are also broken down by the following political party groups, with the percent who answered yes in October in parentheses.
- All Voters: 59% (57%)
- Democrats: 73% (72%)
- Republicans: 48% (46%)
- Independents: 54% (49%)
The survey also found that 30% of voters are most sympathetic to Israel in the fight against Hamas, which is down from 41% in October.
The overall percentage of voters supporting both questions has record lows since polling began in October.
Support for military aid to Israel saw a seven-point drop; all political parties showed lower levels of support from October. Republican voters were the only group that was over 50% in support, with a thin 51% margin saying yes.
For providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians, the percent who answered yes increased by two points with each voter group showing more support today than they did in October.
President Joe Biden has pledged support to Israel in the Middle East conflict. The support for Ukraine and Israel has become a key topic for the 2024 election.
The results of the latest survey show that a majority of American voters want to stop sending military aid to Israel and a small majority want to support humanitarian aid to Palestinians.
Meanwhile, a $95.3 billion funding bill to help provide support to Israel and Ukraine is currently stalled in Congress after passing the Senate with bipartisan support.
The bill includes billions of dollars for humanitarian aid to help civilians, including Palestinians as well as security assistance for Israel.
The U.S. has provided around $130 billion to Israel for over 75 years.
