March 2 will go down as National Egg McMuffin Day for restaurant giant McDonald's Corp MCD. This year, the restaurant chain celebrates 50 years of nationwide breakfast with several special offers.

Here's a look back at the launch of the Egg McMuffin and how much investors could have made along the way.

McDonald's Breakfast Launch: McDonald's has launched many menu items over the year, but like the Happy Meal, the launch of the Egg McMuffin might be one of the most iconic in the company's history.

"In 1975, a breakfast revolution began with the nationwide debut of the Egg McMuffin at McDonald's," the company said.

McDonald's is celebrating the anniversary with $1 Egg McMuffin offers for its app users and several breakfast specials throughout the month of March.

"50 years later, it's still the GOAT."

The Egg McMuffin invention is credited to Herb Peterson, a McDonald's franchisee in California. In 1971, Peterson presented his take on the classic Eggs Benedict breakfast staple that was ins sandwich form.

"When I watched my father introduce this idea to Ray Kroc, we could not have anticipated it would become the foundation for the renowned McDonald's breakfast menu," said Peterson's son and McDonald's Owner/Operator David Peterson. "It's been remarkable to see people embrace this innovation over the last five decades, and now we get to share that heritage with a new generation of breakfast fans."

The introduction of the Egg McMuffin by Peterson came as several restaurant operators considered developing a breakfast menu for McDonald's.

The Egg McMuffin launched in test markets in 1972 at a cost of 63 cents. Later in 1975, the Egg McMuffin national roll-out took place.

McDonald's launching the Egg McMuffin nationwide kickstarted its breakfast ambitions and two years later the company would add a full breakfast menu that featured this iconic sandwich, hotcakes, hash browns, sausage, scrambled eggs, toasted English muffins and danishes.

The addition of breakfast has added billions of dollars in revenue to McDonald's over the years.

Investing $1,000 in MCD Stock: Investors who recognized the potential of additional revenue from having breakfast items and being open for breakfast hours could have considered buying McDonald's stock in 1975.

McDonald's stock traded at a split-adjusted high of $1.03 on March 2, 1975, the date used in this exercise for the national rollout of the Egg McMuffin.

A $1,000 investment at the time could have purchased 970.87 MCD shares.

Today, the $1,000 investment would be worth $299,339.10, up 29,833.9%. This return does not include dividends, which could have been reinvested or used to buy McDonald's menu items like the Egg McMuffin to support your stock holding.
