In the world of sports betting, being right around 50% of the time will likely lose money over time. Bettors who can be right at a higher percentage can generate positive returns more often than not. One Reddit user has had a 100% success rate at picking the Super Bowl matchups over the last 16 years. There’s just one catch.

What Happened: Hundreds of millions of people tuned in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. The game aired on Fox, a unit of Fox Corporation FOXFOXA, the media company that was able to get around $7 million for each commercial.

Billions of dollars of betting on the game was expected, with bettors picking the winner of the matchup, who would win Super Bowl MVP, how many yards players would have during the game and prop bets like the color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach.

One can hope that Reddit user im_THIS_guy didn’t place money on the outcome of Super Bowl LVII.

The Reddit user has gone viral over the years for incorrectly picking the winner of the Super Bowls dating back now 16 seasons. That’s right: the Reddit user picked the Eagles to win Super Bowl LVII, going with the favored team.

“I’m the guy who has incorrectly picked the last 15 Super Bowl winners and I’m back with my Super Bowl pick,” the user posted 10 days ago on Reddit.

The user said he saw similarities between the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings due to their close wins during the regular season and during the NFL playoffs.

“Meanwhile, the Eagles have been rolling all season. 1 total loss when Hurts started. 1. And that game was fluky. A couple of turnovers prevented Hurts from an undefeated season. And this team has just gotten better as the season has gone on.”

Despite the spread had the Eagles favored by 1.5 points and a close game expected by many, the Reddit user said he saw the Eagles matchup with the Chiefs as being lop-sided.

“I predict that the Philadelphia Eagles will win the Super Bowl. I think the Chiefs' luck runs out. They just don’t have the weapons to keep up with the Eagle. I am dropping a ton of money on the Eagles moneyline.”

The user said they planned on winning back “a sizable portion of my losses from past years.”

“This game is a no brainer. Do Not Overthink It. Bet the better team.”

The user also questioned if Mahomes would be 100% for the game due to an ankle injury. Mahomes went on to win the Super Bowl MVP trophy, throwing three touchdown passes.

A previous post said the Reddit user started the incorrect picks after “putting a ton of money” on the New England Patriots, who were 18-0 at the time, to beat the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

“Ever since then, I’ve lost more money that I can count betting Super Bowl money lines.”

Why It’s Important: It’s tough to predict the winner of some Super Bowls, especially when the matchup between the Chiefs and Eagles was expected to be tight all game.

Benzinga shared that a model fed to OpenAI showed the game being a coin flip, predicting each team to win on different occasions. This came after the chatbot model had predicted five of five NFL playoff matchup winners correctly.

One person who did get Super Bowl LVII predictions correct was former NFL player and current commentator Nate Burleson.

Burleson said Chiefs coach Andy Reid would coach his best game that we had ever seen.

“I have the Chiefs winning this 38-35,” Burleson said.

Burleson also correctly predicted that Patrick Mahomes would win Super Bowl MVP. Mahomes was the betting favorite prior to the game, with odds of +120 at most sportsbooks.

Rapper Drake won $700,000 on correctly predicting the Chiefs to win the game, but struck out on six game props, losing $270,000 on the prop bets.

Sports betting company Action Network tweeted that bettors should have done the opposite of what the Reddit user posted, which could become a big theme next year, with bettors picking against whoever the Reddit user selects.
