The 2023 National Football League season kicks off on Sept. 7 with a matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions, a game that can be seen on Comcast Corporation CMCSA units NBC and Peacock.
The Chiefs and Lions are among the top contenders to win the 2024 Super Bowl, also known as Super Bowl LVIII, which will air on CBS, Nickelodeon and stream on Paramount+, all units of Paramount Global PARAPARAA.
Here’s a look at the favorites heading into the 2023 NFL season.
The 2023 NFL Favorites: The Kansas City Chiefs won the last Super Bowl and have been dominant in recent years, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. A simulation of NFL video game Madden 24 saw the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in 2024 once again, and that’s the prediction that sportsbooks have made.
Here are the current favorites to win Super Bowl LVIII, according to odds from DraftKings Inc DKNG and how much a $10 bet would pay if they won the NFL championship.

- Philadelphia Eagles: +650, $75, $65 profit

Nine of the top 11 teams made the playoffs in the 2022 NFL season with the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl as the No. 1 seed and the Eagles losing the Super Bowl as the other No. 1 seed. Of the top favored teams, the Jets and Lions didn’t make the 2022 NFL Playoffs.
The Jets made a splash in the offseason by trading multiple draft picks to land four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers as its new quarterback. The New York Jets currently have the longest playoff drought of all teams in the four major North American sports sitting at 12 seasons. The Jets were the featured team on HBO series "Hard Knocks," which has seen mixed success for teams appearing.
Several of the top favored teams will play each other in the first week of the NFL season, which could give bettors a better picture of the Super Bowl favorites. Along with the Chiefs and Lions facing off against each other, the Bills and Jets play each other and the Chargers and Dolphins play each other.

Super Bowl History: Of the top 100 favored teams all have been to a Super Bowl, except the Detroit Lions who are one of four teams (Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans) who have not played in the big game. Of the 10 teams that have been to a Super Bowl, the Bills, Bengals and Chargers have never won.
The Chiefs have recent Super Bowl success winning two of the last four big games and appearing in three of the last four. The Eagles lost the last Super Bowl, but have a recent win in 2018.
For others, it’s been years since they played in a Super Bowl. The 49ers and Cowboys haven’t won Super Bowls since 1995 and 1996, respectively. The Dolphins' last Super Bowl win was in 1974 and the team's last appearance was in 1985 with a young Dan Marino at quarterback in his only appearance in the big game.
The preseason odds for the Super Bowl are often wrong, but highlight the teams that have the best odds of reaching the NFL Playoffs and likewise getting to the big game.
The Chiefs were ranked third with odds of around +1000 at many sportsbooks to win Super Bowl LVII at the start of the 2022 NFL season. The Bills were the favorite in the preseason with odds of around +600. A $10 bet on the Chiefs at the start of last season to win Super Bowl LVII paid out $110 for a profit of $100.
The favorites at the start of the last NFL season were the Bills, Buccaneers, Chiefs, Rams, Packers, Chargers, 49ers, Broncos, Ravens and Cowboys. Of the 10 teams, seven made the playoffs with the Rams, Packers and Broncos turning in disappointing seasons for bettors.
The Eagles, who went 14-3 last season and secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC before appearing in Super Bowl LVII, had the 13th-best odds to win last year’s big game at the start of the season. A bet on the Eagles to win the Super Bowl last year had preseason odds of +2,400, which would have turned a $10 bet into $250 and a profit of $240 if the team had beaten the Chiefs.
