Key Storylines: The first Monday Night Football game starts a 2023 season that will see both teams have six primetime television games.
In 2022, the Bills had primetime television games and posted a perfect 5-0 record in the games.
The Jets also come into the 2023 NFL season with amplified media visibility thanks to an appearance on the NFL preseason docuseries “Hard Knocks,” which airs on Warner Bros. Discovery’s WBD HBO and Max streaming platforms.
Both the Jets and Bills have high expectations for the 2023 season. The Bills are one of 12 active NFL teams that have never won a Super Bowl. The Jets have not been to a Super Bowl since 1968 and currently hold the longest active playoff drought of all North American sports teams.
Perhaps the biggest storyline for the game is the offseason trade that saw the Jets land NFL star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. While with the Packers, Rodgers won a Super Bowl and four NFL MVP awards. In the 2022 season with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers threw for 3,695 yards and 26 touchdown passes. He's surpassed 4,000 passing yards in six of his past nine seasons and did so in 9 of the 11 seasons where he played at least 16 games.
In the 2022 season, the Bills posted a 13-3 record, which was second best in the NFL and secured the team the number two seed in the AFC. The Bills won their first playoff matchup against the Dolphins 34-31 before losing to the Cincinnati Bengals 27-10. The Jets posted a 7-10 record in the 2022 NFL season, falling down the stretch with a 1-7 record in their last eight games.
The teams split their 2022 matches with the Jets winning in week 9 against the Bills 20-17 and the Bills winning in week 14 with a score of 20-12. The Bills faced off against Rodgers and the Packers in the 2022 season, winning the week 8 matchup with a score of 27-17. Rodgers had 203 passing yards with two passing touchdowns and an interception.
Monday’s matchup will see two brothers compete against each other with James Cook (Bills) taking on Dalvin Cook (Jets). Both players are running backs, meaning they won’t be on the field competing against each other. Older brother Dalvin is a new addition to the Jets this season, while James is expected to be the starting running back for the Bills after the departure of Devin Singletary.
