The San Francisco 49ers were one of the early favorites to win Super Bowl LVIII, with odds of +1,000 to start the 2023 NFL season.
With a 5-0 record and strong gameplay, the 49ers are now the betting favorite to win the next Super Bowl.
Despite the success, their star quarterback is one of the lowest-paid at his position and currently lives with a roommate.
What Happened: In the early weeks of the 2023 NFL season, there have been several storylines including season-ending injuries, surprise teams and of course the rumored romance between Travis Kelce and bestselling musician Taylor Swift.
Another storyline playing out is the continued emergence of Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
Purdy was drafted with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, giving him the unfortunate nickname of “Mr. Irrelevant,” which is given to the last player taken each year. Purdy entered the 49ers roster as the third-string quarterback behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.
A string of injuries in the 2022 season saw Purdy become the starter and the rest, as they say, is history. Purdy is now the only one of the three previously mentioned quarterbacks still on the 49ers’ roster.
In his short NFL career, Purdy now has a 10-0 record and has surged up the rankings and helped his team.

Purdy has done all of this while being paid a base salary of $870,000 for the 2023 NFL season on a four-year, $3.7 million contract. Earning six figures places Purdy ahead of many in other professions, yet it ranks him among the lowest-paid starting quarterbacks in the NFL. In fact, several backup quarterbacks, even on his own team, have higher salaries.
Purdy, as a member of the 49ers, plays in one of the markets that also ranks among the highest for the cost of housing, leading to a surprising revelation by the quarterback.
In a recent interview with Today, Purdy shared that he lives with a roommate, and they split rent, as reported by CBS.
San Francisco is the third most expensive city, which might not make the news too surprising, but it’s not every day you hear of a star player having a roommate.
“So he and I are still splitting rent,” Purdy said in the interview. “I still drive my Toyota Sequoia.”
Purdy said his roommate is an offensive lineman on the 49ers.
As the last of the nine quarterbacks taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy wasn’t eligible for as high of a salary or signing bonus as others. He is set to make $985,000 in the 2024 NFL season and $1.1 million in the 2025 NFL season, and could be in for a big raise in the future given his current play.
Purdy has put up 1,271 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and thrown zero interceptions in the five 2023 games. The 49ers are one of only two undefeated NFL teams with a 5-0 record, and rank second in the league in points scored (167), are tied for best in points allowed (68) and rank first in point differential (99).
Betting Odds: With the 5-0 record and strong play of Purdy, both are soaring up the leaderboards on sports betting platforms like DraftKings Inc DKNG.
The 49ers are now the betting favorite to win Super Bowl LVIII at odds of +350, ranking ahead of preseason favorites Kansas City Chiefs (+550) and the other undefeated team, the Philadelphia Eagles (+800), who lost to the Chiefs in last year’s Super Bowl.
Purdy is now tied for third place in the betting odds for NFL MVP for the 2023 season at odds of +700. Purdy is tied with Jalen Hurts (Eagles QB) and Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills QB) for third place. Outranked by Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs QB) and Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins QB) at odds of +450 and +475 respectively.
If Purdy does win the MVP Award, he might have to ask his roommate if he’s able to display it prominently in their residence.
