A Week 12 National Football League game featured only one touchdown and had one of the lowest total scores of the 2023 season, which may have upset some bettors hoping to cash the over and player props.
One bettor who may have predicted a low scoring game scored a big win.
What Happened: A growing in popularity bet for sports bettors is the anytime touchdown bet, which cashes if the player scores a touchdown in the game, something an NFL player did for 17 consecutive games over the last two seasons.
Bettors can also bet on which player will score the first touchdown in an NFL game, which player will score the last touchdown in a game or if a player will score more than one touchdown in a game.
The newly released ESPN Bet platform from PENN Entertainment PENN is the first major sportsbook to offer bettors a way to bet on players not scoring touchdowns, which may have been the way to go in a recent game.
The Monday Night Football matchup between the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 27 ended with a 12-10 victory for the Bears, taking its record to 4-8 on the season. The game, which aired on Walt Disney Co DIS unit ESPN, saw 0 points scored in the first quarter, six points scored in the first half and a total of 22 points scored by both teams combined in four quarters, easily hitting under on a line that was set around 42 to 43 points at most books.
One of the stars of the game was Bears kicker Cairo Santos who made four of the five field goals he attempted, scoring all 12 points for his team.
The lone touchdown in the game was scored by the Vikings in the fourth quarter by tight end T.J. Hockenson. The tight end had five catches for 50 yards in the game and now has 80 receptions for 786 yards and five touchdowns in the 2023 season.

Betting Big on Hockenson: One bettor placed a two-leg parlay with DraftKings Inc DKNG for the Monday Night Football game with Hockenson featured in both legs.
The bettor wagered $5 that Hockenson would score the first touchdown in the game and score the last touchdown in the game. With Hockenson's touchdown the only touchdown in the game, the parlay was a successful bet.
The parlay would have also won if Hockenson scored the first touchdown, more touchdowns were scored and he scored a second touchdown later in the game as the last touchdown.
The bettor wagered $5 with odds of +10,000, which paid out a profit of $500. While this wasn't a huge win dollar-wise, the percent and odds were large and the payout may have helped ease the pain of watching another 2023 primetime game with low scoring.
