Zinger Key Points
- Tom Brady has retired from the NFL on two occasions.
- With his NFL playing career set to end, Brady looks to stay close to the league with several ventures.
Legendary quarterback Tom Brady has retired from the National Football League. While he has committed to becoming a sportscaster, Brady could also have another job title related to the NFL soon.
What Happened: For the second straight year, Brady announced his retirement from the NFL. While there were rumors that Brady would unretire once again, he appears to be done with his football playing career.
What's next for the GOAT? It looks like Brady’s next role in the NFL could be as a team owner.
Earlier this month, there was speculation that Brady was considering buying a share in the Las Vegas Raiders.
ESPN reported Monday that the Raiders' ownership has “come to an agreement” with Brady for an ownership stake.
“We’re excited for Tom to join the Raiders, and it’s exciting because he will be just the third player in the history of the National Football League to become an owner,” Raiders owner Mark Davis told ESPN.
George Halas and Jerry Richardson are the other two former NFL players who became team owners according to ESPN.
While some sports leagues have had players who become owners and also continue playing the game, this scenario for Brady is said to be unlikely. Being an owner and player would require league approval from owners and based on previous comments, Brady appears to be done with his playing days.
Raiders owner Davis would not comment on whether Brady would seek to play for the team.
For Brady to secure an ownership stake, he would need approval from the league, a procedure required by NFL owners for any prospective minor or major team stakeholder.
Owning a stake in the Raiders would not be the first professional sports team in the Brady portfolio. Brady acquired a stake in the Las Vegas Aces WNBA team earlier this year. The Las Vegas Aces are also owned by Davis. Brady is also an owner in a pickleball franchise.
The seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback has several ties to the Raiders with his former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, now the head coach of the team.
Brady spent 20 seasons with the New England Patriots before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to signing with the Buccaneers, Brady was reportedly considering signing with the Raiders to be their quarterback.
After losing David Carr to free agency, the Raiders have now turned to Brady’s former Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo (New England 2014 to 2016).

Why It’s Important: Brady is considered one of the best NFL players of all time. He finished his NFL career with 89,214 yards, 649 TD and a 64.3% completion percentage over 335 regular season games.
One question mark for Brady is his deal signed with Fox Sports, a unit of Fox Corporation FOXFOXA. Brady previously signed a $375 million contract for ten seasons to broadcast NFL games as a lead analyst.
Brady's broadcasting work is scheduled to begin in 2024 and is said to be unaffected by the announcement of his interest in owning an NFL team. ESPN said that Fox has “blessed” the Raiders team ownership agreement.
