Did Elon Musk's SpaceX Steal Logo Of Small Scottish Soccer Club? Team Makes Surprising Request Instead Of Lawsuit

Zinger Key Points
  • A small Scottish soccer team pointed out similarities in their logo to a new SpaceX logo.
  • The team isn't looking for a lawsuit and instead is celebrating the attention from Musk.

In 2022, Elon Musk completed a $44 billion acquisition of social media platform Twitter. Rumors also came out that Musk was interested in buying one of the biggest soccer teams in the world, something that proved to be false.

A small soccer team is now seeking Musk’s attention after Musk-owned SpaceX changed their logo.

What Happened: Rumors of Musk buying Manchester United MANU proved to be untrue, but the world’s richest man did share his love of the sport of soccer, or football, depending on what part of the world you live in.

Musk also attended the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Scottish football club Haddington Town AFC, while not globally renowned or on Musk's radar, is curious as to why SpaceX appears to have stolen its logo.

SpaceX put a new logo badge at its Starbase spaceport last month. The logo in question features a goat in a circle made in a white outline on a dark background and appears similar to that of the Scottish soccer team's emblem, as shared by Insider.

The use of the goat on the soccer team’s logo isn’t a huge surprise to anyone in the area, as it is used for the local school and on statutes in the small town. For SpaceX, the goat could be a reference to the acronym GOAT, which stands for greatest of all time.

Haddington Town AFC took to Twitter to joke about the similarities and how Musk must be a fan of their club.

“Why has Elon Musk stole our badge, give it back,” the team tweeted.

The team is located in the small town of Haddington, which has a population of around 10,000 people and is 15 miles from Edinburgh.

The small Scottish team plays in the East of Scotland Football League (EOSFL), where it is currently ranked third of 16 teams with seven wins and two losses in nine contests. The team has allowed the fewest goals on the season, with only seven goals allowed in the nine contests.

What’s Next: Haddington Town AFC has ruled out a lawsuit against Musk and SpaceX, but does have one wish for the billionaire.

The team is hoping that Musk will buy them. “We don’t want legal action, we welcome Elon to our squad,” the team tweeted.

“If he wants to come to Scotland and be part of a football team we’ll be his Wrexham,” club representative Ryan Leishman told The Times of London.

Wrexham AFC was bought by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020 and is among the latest teams to be purchased by a celebrity.

Leishman also mentioned that perhaps Musk could play for the team someday.

“We’ll put him up front. He’s a big laddie – 240 pounds and six-foot plus.”

Elon Musk is the world’s richest person, worth $239 billion according to Bloomberg. At one point in 2021, Musk was worth over $280 billion and could have bought every MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL franchise.

While the soccer team is not looking to sue Musk over the logo, the billionaire could face several lawsuits over the name change and logo change of Twitter to X.
