Nestled next to the excitement of the NFL Draft in Detroit, the Benzinga Sports Business Titans Draft event hosted a compelling panel that delved into how elite athletes parlay their sports disciplines into thriving business careers.
Moderated by Spencer Bailey of Vosa Spirits, the panel featured insights from boxing titan Claressa Shields and track and field star Crystal Manning, who discussed their transitions from athletic stardom to entrepreneurial ventures.
From Olympic Gold To Business Bold
Shields, who stands out for her Olympic victories and dominance in boxing, shared her journey into diverse arenas such as acting, fitness training and motivational speaking.
“In my career, I’ve always done what no one else is willing to do. This also applies to my business endeavors,” Shields said, revealing her strategic approach to conquering new fields.
Her work ethic, a remnant of her athletic training, fuels her success across various endeavors. “I put in so many hours and try to juggle it all, doing what people won’t do,” she added, showcasing her commitment to excellence.
A Leap From Sports To Spotlight
Manning discussed how her being a USA Track & Field triple jumper sparked her interest in filmmaking and entrepreneurship.
“I started writing out of boredom during training sessions, which eventually turned into filmmaking,” Manning shared.
Her narrative talents have earned her accolades in the independent film arena and notable invitations from the industry’s elite circles. Manning credits her athletic discipline for her ability to chase ambitious goals in both sports and the film industry, highlighting the dual nature of her career path.
Being Role Models And Mentors
Shields and Manning emphasized the profound influence of mentors and role models in their journeys.
Shields spoke passionately about Serena Williams, whom she viewed as a paragon of strength and success. “Serena was the best, and she was built like I was. It made me believe I could be great too,” Shields said, underscoring the importance of visibility and representation in achieving greatness. Manning referred to Tyra Banks and Serena Williams as pivotal influences shaping her aspirations beyond the track.
Dual Demands Of Sport And Business
The athletes also touched on the intricate balance required to manage careers in both competitive sports and business.
Shields, in particular, discussed the logistical challenges of training for MMA while fulfilling her entrepreneurial goals. “Sometimes I don’t have enough time. It’s about managing time and maintaining the intensity from the sports world in the business arena,” she said, stressing the relentless pace required to excel in both fields.
The panel at Benzinga’s Sports Business Titans Draft offered an inspiring look at how the skills developed in sports arenas can effectively translate into business success. Through their narratives, Shields and Manning illuminated the pathways athletes can take to achieve and redefine success across multiple domains.
