The 2024 Summer Olympics have been full of heartwarming stories and record-breaking performances. There are also stories of defeat and heartbreak, including one that involves a close relative of Bill Gates.

What Happened: Gates was seen in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics alongside his daughter Jennifer Gates, who is married to Olympic athlete Nayel Nassar.

Nassar competed in the 2012 and 2020 Olympics and qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics as a member of Team Egypt. Nasser was born in Chicago to Egyptian parents, making him eligible to compete for Egypt in international competitions, as reported by People.

Nassar, who married Jennifer in 2021, had to pull out of his Equestrian event at the Olympics.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce our withdrawal from the 2024 Olympic Games," Nassar wrote on Instagram. "After successfully passing the first veterinary inspection earlier this week, Coronado unfortunately sustained a minor injury in the days after, and regretfully we must end our Olympic journey here."

Coronado is Nassar's horse and Olympic rules prevent riders from switching horses after the first inspection is done.

Nassar said it was important to "prioritize Coronado's long-term health and recovery."

"Our ultimate goal is to ensure that Coronado can return to peak form, and once again compete at the highest levels, even if that means sacrificing the life-long dream of Olympic glory in the short-term."

Evergate Stables, which owns Coronado, was co-founded by Jennifer Gates and Nassar.

"The horse's welfare always comes first. A huge disappointment to not be able to compete but I am still just as proud as ever of @NayelNassar and @Evergatestables," Gates posted on her Instagram story.

Did You Know?

Why It's Important: The story of Nassar and his horse in the Olympics could help illustrate an important decision he made about the welfare of his animal over his own personal aspirations.

Some Olympic athletes travel to the games and fail to qualify for the later rounds or final heats of their events. Others face injuries or illness at inopportune times.

While he's likely disappointed in the outcome at the Olympics, horse racing remains one of the keys to Nassar's life and a reason he is married to Gates.

The love of horses by Nassar and Gates helped bring them together.

"He's a professional, and I do this as an amateur. So, to be able to share our love and passion for horses with each other is just incredible," Gates previously said.

The 2024 Summer Olympics weren't a total bust for Bill and his family, as they were able to attend several events and cheer on American athletes before they learned of Nassar's decision.

Gates, girlfriend Paula Hurd, Nassar, and Jennfier attended the women's gymnastics all-around final, where Simone Biles and Suni Lee took home gold and bronze medals respectively for Team USA.

Gates was also spotted at the men's gymnastics all-around final, where Team USA won a bronze medal, their first medal in 16 years.
