That fourth-quarter sprint helped lift China&#8217;s full-year GDP growth to 5.0% in 2024, in line with the official target of &#8220;around 5%,&#8221; CNBC cites China&#8217;s National Bureau of Statistics on Friday.

A cooler-than-expected December producer inflation report failed to ignite lasting gains on Wall Street Tuesday, reflecting lingering concerns about persistently high inflation <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/inflation">among investors</a>.
Early session advances across major indices faded into modest losses by midday trading in New York, as market participants exercised caution ahead of Wednesday's pivotal Consumer Price Index report and key fourth-quarter earnings from top Wall Street banks.
The Producer Price Index rose 3.3% year-over-year in December, accelerating from November's 3% increase but missing the 3.4% forecast. On a monthly basis, producer prices climbed 0.2%, slowing from November's 0.4% rise and falling short of the 0.3% <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/01/42974739/wall-street-rebounds-as-producer-inflation-misses-estimates-tesla-gains-chinese-stocks-rally">consensus estimate</a>.
Core PPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 3.5% annually, matching November's pace but undershooting expectations of 3.8%. On a month-to-month basis, core inflation stagnated, showing zero growth compared to November's 0.2% increase, and coming in below forecasts for a 0.3% gain.
Bond yields continued to climb, underscoring persistent inflationary pressure. The 30-year Treasury yield advanced to 5%, its highest level since October 2023 and marking territory not seen since August 2007.
After a three-day rally, crude oil prices cooled. West Texas Intermediate fell 1% to $78 per barrel, as investors locked in recent gains.

Investors found relief on Tuesday as December&#8217;s producer prices came in below expectations, alleviating inflation concerns that have threatened to derail the Federal Reserve&#8217;s plans for potential policy <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42973016/producer-prices-rise-less-than-expected-offer-opportunity-for-market-rebound">easing during 2025.</a>
Major U.S. indices moved higher in early trading as Treasury yields stalled, giving traders space to reassess interest rate expectations ahead of Wednesday&#8217;s pivotal consumer inflation report.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Softer Producer Inflation Provides Market Oxygen</h3>
In December 2024, the Producer Price Index rose 3.3% year-over-year, slightly below forecasts of 3.4%. Core producer inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, remained steady at 3.5% annually, but monthly core prices flattened, reflecting softer price pressures across underlying components.

Consumer discretionary stocks were among the day's top performers, driven by a 3% rally in Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>). 
Shares of the EV giant climbed after a bullish note from Morgan Stanley, which raised Tesla's price target from $400 to $430 and projected a best-case scenario of $800. The firm cited the company's growing potential in autonomous rideshare and robotaxi services as key <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/01/42967935/tsla-stock-rises-3-in-tuesday-pre-market-whats-going-on">drivers for long-term growth.</a>
The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) advanced 1%, reflecting broad strength across the sector.

The firm expects sentiment and liquidity to improve in the late first quarter of 2025 due to better tariff and policy clarity.

Goldman Sachs maintained an overweight call on online retail, media, and healthcare stocks while upgrading consumer services shares to overweight.
Last week, HSBC voiced a similar opinion on Chinese stocks to Bloomberg. Alibaba is considered the tech barometer of China.
Last November, Goldman Sachs predicted that Chinese shares could gain about 20% over the next 12 months, backed by stimulus measures to support the economy. The MSCI China Index has lost about 10% since then due to economic weakness, with additional U.S. tariffs posing a double whammy.
Investors can gain exposure to Chinese equities through iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) and KraneShares Trust KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KWEB#NYSE">KWEB</a>).

What To Know: Burry has made significant investments in Chinese tech companies Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>), JD.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>) and Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIDU#NASDAQ">BIDU</a>). In fact, those three investments represent nearly half of his fund's portfolio, according to its most recent 13F filing.&nbsp;

Chinese stocks underperformed the broader market in 2024, but that may change in 2025.&nbsp;
The People's Bank of China recently <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/794577b2-6bdd-4a03-bfab-19463543048a">told</a> the Financial Times that it will likely cut interest rates "at the appropriate time" in 2025.&nbsp;The PBOC also said it would prioritize "the role of interest rate adjustments" and place less emphasis on "quantitative objectives" for loan growth.&nbsp;
If China lowers interest rates, Chinese companies would benefit from improved consumer spending, higher stock valuations and potentially more investment and expansion as money would be cheaper to borrow.&nbsp;
The "Big Short" investor has hedged his China bets, however. He purchased put options on Alibaba. JD.com and Baidu shares in the third quarter, allowing the fund to protect its downside risk while still maintaining exposure to potential upside in Chinese stocks.
