Technology stocks surged on Friday, rebounding sharply after Thursday&#8217;s decline, as investor confidence in the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence-driven rally remained high.</a>
The Nasdaq 100 index jumped over 1%, reaching 18,820 points by 1 p.m. in New York, setting the stage for a record high close and marking its fifth consecutive week of gains — the longest streak since January.
The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.7%, though it only partially recovered from Thursday&#8217;s losses. Small-cap stocks saw robust gains, with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) up 1%, while blue chips increased by just 0.2%.
Chipmakers, solar and power utilities were the top-performing industries, as traders appeared to broaden their focus to a wider array of AI-related beneficiaries.
Treasury yields remained stable as Thursday&#8217;s inflation concerns eased slightly following the University of Michigan&#8217;s downward revision of consumer inflation expectations. As a result, the U.S. dollar index (DXY), tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), fell 0.3%, ending a six-day winning streak.
The weakening dollar provided some relief to precious metals, with gold and silver rising 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively, while crude oil, as tracked by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>), increased by 1%.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) edged up 0.6%, on track to close its second consecutive positive week for the first time since early March.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) was trading 0.6% higher to $529.09, the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) rose 0.2% to $391.29 and the tech-heavy Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) was 1% higher to $458.05, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro data</a>. 
Among sectors, the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) outperformed, up by 1.1%. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) lagged, easing 0.1%.

The company announced a 10-for-1 stock split and raised its quarterly dividend by 150%.
BJ&#8217;s Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BJ#NYSE">BJ</a>) reported better-than-expected results for its first quarter on Thursday. e.l.f. Beauty, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ELF#NYSE">ELF</a>) shares jumped around 19% on Thursday after the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings.
On the economic data front, U.S. initial jobless claims declined by 8,000 to 215,000 in the week ending May 18, compared to market estimates of 220,000. The S&amp;P Global manufacturing PMI rose to 50.9 in May from 50 in April, while services PMI climbed to 54.8 in May from 51.3.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with utilities, real estate and consumer discretionary stocks recording the biggest losses on Thursday. However, information technology stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 606 points to 39,065.26 on Thursday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.74% at 5,267.84, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.39% at 16,736.03 during Thursday's session.

In <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">premarket</a> trading on Friday, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) climbed 0.28% to $527.45 and the Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) traded up 0.30% at $455.0, according to <a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/lxquj26b2sag" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro data</a>.
Cues From Previous Session
U.S. stocks clocked back-to-back losses on Thursday notwithstanding the nearly 10% rally seen in market heavyweight Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>). Data showing weekly jobless claims falling more than expected in the recent reporting week and better-than-expected S&amp;P Global final private sector purchasing managers indices weighed down on sentiment. The strong data trimmed the odds of multiple Fed rate cuts this year, dampening the market mood.
The major indices opened higher and then took divergent routes. The Dow Industrials of which Nvidia is not a component fell steadily in the morning and sharply in the afternoon, with all 30 index components closing in the red. The Nasdaq Composite and the S&amp;P 500 Index hovered above the unchanged line until the mid-session, thanks to the Nvidia prop, but succumbed to rate worries thereafter.
Ten of the 11 S&amp;P 500 sector classes retreated, with IT stocks alone bucking the downtrend.
Reacting to the pullback, Jamie Cox, Managing Partner for Harris Financial Group, said, &#8220;Markets tend to take breather heading into a long holiday weekend. &nbsp;The Fed minutes provided the catalyst and not even Nvidia could refocus markets on the positives.&#8221;

Fund manager Louis Navellier sees volatility ahead. &#8220;Overall, the earnings season is largely over. The market will start to oscillate going forward. Any stocks that post good earnings are good buys on dips,&#8221; he said.
Meanwhile, Carson Group&#8217;s Ryan Detrick pointed to another bullish historical trend. The market strategist noted that Wednesday marked the 100th trading session and the S&amp;P 500 was still holding its double-digit year-to-date gain. Gains of similar magnitudes were seen in 2021, 2019, 2013, 1998, 1997, 1996, and 1995, he noted. 
All these years saw the gains continuing into the second half, he added.

Crude oil futures were on a five-session losing streak and traded just above $76-a-barrel in the early European session. Gold futures rose modestly and yet traded just above $2,340 an ounce, way off from their all-time highs. The U.S. 10-year note yield was founding flatlining around 4.473%. after it surged up over 1.2% on Thursday. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) retreated below the $67.5K mark by virtue of its 3%+ decline over the past 24 hours.
The global markets were seen swathed in a sea of red, with Asian stocks ending notably lower for the session, led by the Japanese, Hong Kong, Chinese, South Korean and Australian markets. The negative lead from Wall Street overnight and concerns about a potential delay in the U.S. Fed pivot weighed down on sentiment.
European stocks fell moderately in early trading amid the release of some sore domestic data.

After two major meme-stock-driven gains in May and June, GameStop (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gme-stock-quote/">GME</a>) stock has mostly been on the down and out. Having gained 48% year-to-date, it&rsquo;s hard to call the 2024 performance of GameStop stock a disaster. This time last year, it traded slightly lower than today.&nbsp;



Keith Gill, the man behind the &ldquo;Roaring Kitty&rdquo; persona, used his notoriety surrounding the video game retailer&rsquo;s stock, to make a little money on GME, announcing on Reddit June 2 that he&rsquo;d made a <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/01/business/roaring-kitty-sued-for-pump-and-dump-scheme-with-gamestop-stock/">$116 million</a> bet on it. By June 6, they&rsquo;d doubled in price, to $46.55. By June 13, Gill had sold all 120,000 call options, making a sizable gain.



Now, Gill has chosen to make a big bet on Chewy (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/chwy-stock-quote/">CHWY</a>), GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen&rsquo;s original masterpiece.&nbsp;



On July 1, filed disclosure forms with the SEC, indicating that he&rsquo;d acquired a 6.6% stake in the online pet food retailer for <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/01/business/chewy-stock-briefly-soars-after-roaring-kitty-discloses-6-6-stake/">$245 million</a>. Its shares briefly jumped more than 10%. However, they closed July 3 trading, down nearly 12% from the stock&rsquo;s closing price on June 28, the day before Gill&rsquo;s announcement.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



Even though I don&rsquo;t have the time of day for GameStop stock, it&rsquo;s a better bet than Chewy.&nbsp;



Here&rsquo;s why.&nbsp;



<h2>Chewy Stock Down 36% in the Last Year</h2>



Over the past year, Chewy is down over 36%, compared to a nearly 2% gain for GameStop. I&rsquo;m not surprised that GME is lapping the online retailer.&nbsp;



GameStop is a company without a tangible plan to fix its failing brick-and-mortar retail business, while Chewy appears to be following e-commerce 101 to get its business remotely profitable. Yet the former is the stock with gains to show for it over the past year.&nbsp;



Don&rsquo;t get me wrong, I&rsquo;m not a fan of either stock.



In January, I wrote that even though it&rsquo;s been a public company for <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/01/3-consumer-stocks-to-sell-in-january-before-they-crash-and-burn/">nearly five years</a>, it&rsquo;s generated cumulative losses of $637 million, demonstrating an inability to consistently make a profit.&nbsp;



While GameStop is hardly what you&rsquo;d call a money-making machine, its accumulated deficit is <a href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/1326380/000132638024000030/gme-20240504.htm">$245 million</a> as of May 4, considerably less than Chewy&rsquo;s at <a href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/1766502/000176650224000020/chwy-20240428.htm">$1.91 billion</a>. Now, that can change in a hurry if either company experiences a surge in profits or losses in the coming quarters.&nbsp;



The point is, even though they both have trouble making money, Chewy, up until recent quarters, hasn&rsquo;t for a very long time. In fact, according to S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, in the 2o quarters since going public in June 2019, it has generated an operating profit on six occasions, the most recent being Q1 2024, at <a href="https://investor.chewy.com/news-and-events/news/news-details/2024/Chewy-Announces-First-Quarter-2024-Financial-Results/default.aspx">$64.6 million</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



As for GameStop, until Q2 2019, according to S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, it made a profit in every quarter over the previous five years. Ryan Cohen came into the picture in <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-ryan-cohen-short-gamestop-125404157.html#:~:text=Investors%20have%20trusted%20Cohen%20to,business%20or%20its%20business%20strategy.">August 2020</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;



<h2>The Bottom Line on GameStop Stock </h2>



In mid-June, I suggested Cohen should invest GameStop&rsquo;s $4 billion in cash in Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/brk.b-stock-quote/">BRK. B</a>) and LVMH (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/lvmuy-stock-quote/">LVMUY</a>), two hands off investments that would surely generate long-term returns for shareholders.&nbsp;



As much as I don&rsquo;t think Cohen knows what he&rsquo;s doing with GameStop, having $4 billion to invest at your disposal makes it a little easier to paper over the mistakes he&rsquo;s made since getting involved four years ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;



For example, Buckle (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bke-stock-quote/">BKE</a>) is a Nebraska-based retailer that has a penchant for paying special dividends each year. In January, it paid a special divvy of <a href="https://www.morningstar.com/stocks/xnys/bke/dividends">$2.50</a>. In the four years before that, it paid out $10.55, plus a quarterly regular dividend of between 30 cents and the current payment of 35 cents.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



With an enterprise value of $1.87 billion, he could pay a 50% premium for its stock &mdash; CEO Daniel Hirschfeld owns <a href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/885245/000088524524000056/bke-20240419.htm">31.9%</a> of the shares, so Cohen would need his blessing for the deal to get traction with the board &mdash; for a purchase price of $2.81 billion, and Cohen would still have nearly $1.2 billion to invest elsewhere.&nbsp;



Except for a $16.2 million operating loss in Q1 2020, Buckle has made a profit in every quarter over the past decade. It might not be &ldquo;collectibles&rdquo; or &ldquo;crypto&rdquo; splashy, but it does what both GameStop and Chewy can&rsquo;t, and that&rsquo;s consistently making money.&nbsp;



As much as it pains me to say it, GameStop is a better speculative buy than Chewy at this point in the proceedings.&nbsp;



That said, I wouldn&rsquo;t buy either.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
