Researchers found that 63% of heavy lifetime cannabis users showed reduced brain activity during a working memory task, while 68% of recent users exhibited a similar decline.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Implications For Memory And Cognitive Performance</h1>
Working memory plays a crucial role in everyday functions, allowing individuals to follow instructions, solve problems and process information efficiently. The decline in brain activity observed in cannabis users correlated with poorer performance on working memory tasks.
&#8220;As cannabis use continues to grow globally, studying its effects on human health has become increasingly important," <a href="https://news.cuanschutz.edu/news-stories/largest-study-ever-done-on-cannabis-and-brain-function-finds-impact-on-working-memory">said</a> lead author Joshua Gowin, Ph.D., an assistant professor of radiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "By doing so, we can provide a well-rounded understanding of both the benefits and risks of cannabis use, empowering people to make informed decisions and fully comprehend the potential consequences.&#8221;
A Thursday <a href="https://news.cuanschutz.edu/news-stories/largest-study-ever-done-on-cannabis-and-brain-function-finds-impact-on-working-memory">report</a> by Julia Milzer for the Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus noted that the study categorized participants into three groups: heavy users who had consumed cannabis more than 1,000 times in their lifetime, moderate users who had consumed between 10 and 999 times and those who had used marijuana fewer than 10 times, essentially non-users.

To assess brain function, researchers conducted MRI scans while participants completed seven cognitive tasks. The tests measured working memory, language skills, motor function, emotional processing, decision-making and social cognition. The latter refers to the processes that influence how people respond to social signals.
The most significant impact was observed in the working memory task, where cannabis users exhibited reduced brain activity in key regions, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, dorsomedial prefrontal cortex and anterior insula. These areas are critical for memory, decision-making, attention and emotional regulation.
&#8220;We applied the highest standards to our research, setting rigorous thresholds for statistical significance across all seven cognitive function tests," Gowin said. "While some of the other tasks indicated potential cognitive impairment, only the working memory task showed a statistically significant impact."
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Potential For Cognitive Recovery</h1>
While the study suggests that abstaining from cannabis before performing cognitive tasks may help improve function, Gowin cautioned against stopping abruptly.
&#8220;People need to be aware of their relationship with cannabis since stopping cold turkey could disrupt their cognition," he said. "For example, heavy users may need to be more cautious."
Looking ahead, researchers say even larger, long-term studies are needed to determine whether cannabis directly alters brain function, how long these effects last and how different age groups are affected.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Ken Herbert cut the price forecast for General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GD#NYSE">GD</a>) to $280 from $290, while <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/GD/analyst-ratings">reiterating an Sector Perform rating</a>.
On Wednesday, the company reported revenue growth of 14.3% year over year to $13.338 billion, beating the consensus of $12.77 billion and EPS of $4.15 (up 14% <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43305515/general-dynamics-beats-q4-expectations-with-144-billion-contract-backlog">Y/Y), above the consensus of $4.10</a>.
In its conference call, the company said it expects a 2025 effective tax rate of 17.5%. The CEO said Gulfstream deliveries will be around 150 aircraft in 2025.

Goldman Sachs analyst Jerry Revich, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/cat/analyst-ratings">maintaining a Buy rating and $442 price forecast</a>, expressed views on Caterpillar, Inc.'s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAT#NYSE">CAT</a>) mixed fourth quarter FY24 results reported today.
Total sales and revenue for the quarter declined 5% year-over-year to $16.215 billion, missing the consensus of $16.411 billion, while adjusted earnings of $5.14 per share came <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43335504/caterpillar-beats-q4-eps-estimates-but-revenue-disappoints-machinery-energy-transportation-segment-faces-pressure">above the consensus of $4.99</a>.
For 2025,&nbsp;sales are expected to decline ~1%&nbsp;due to unfavorable pricing, with a slight headwind in other income from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">lower interest income and currency effects</a>.
The analyst writes that the key discussion around the company is whether the 2025 margin outlook represents a cyclical trough following its fourth-quarter results.
The results highlighted positives such as a sharp increase in destocking ($700 million) and a book-to-bill ratio of 1.08x in orders, adds the analyst. 
However, concerns remain over 2025 margin targets, which are approximately 200 basis points below FactSet consensus, and a fourth-quarter EBIT miss—though the latter is seen as less significant given destocking progress, writes the analyst.
Revich says that while he expects to decline due to the reset in 2025 estimates, the peak of destocking headwinds, strong bookings, and effective cost management amid production cuts could support multiple expansion post-earnings.
The analyst estimates EPS of $21.68 for FY25 and $23.33 for FY26.
