Investor sentiment remained subdued on Wednesday as escalating geopolitical tensions weighed on risk assets ahead of the week&#8217;s most anticipated event: Nvidia Corp.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) third-quarter earnings report, set to be <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/24/11/42093025/will-nvidia-deliver-a-blowout-beat-in-q3-poll-says-maybe-not-but-over-half-see-stock-clearing-150">released after market close.</a>
The market mood deteriorated further after multiple outlets confirmed Ukraine&#8217;s deployment of U.K.-made Storm Shadow missiles into Russian territory, a day after launching U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles.
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely regarded as a barometer of market anxiety, spiked over 9%, underscoring rising apprehension among investors. 
Major U.S. indices were in the red, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 leading losses as technology stocks bore the brunt of the sell-off.
The U.S. dollar resumed its upward trajectory, with the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), a proxy for the greenback&#8217;s strength, climbing 0.7%. Safe-haven demand also bolstered gold, which advanced 0.7%, reflecting investors&#8217; flight to safety.
Meanwhile, natural gas emerged as the standout performer among commodities, surging over 6% on the day.

Ukraine launched its first U.S.-made missile strike on a Russian city, while Russian President Vladimir Putin adjusted the nation's nuclear doctrine to broaden scenarios for a potential response. Yet, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sought to assuage fears of a nuclear escalation, stating that a nuclear war is not something Russia is considering.
Amid the geopolitical noise, investors remained focused on corporate earnings. Walmart Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>), often regarded as a bellwether of consumer health, surpassed expectations for the recent quarter. The retailer&#8217;s stock surged 4%, hitting fresh all-time highs and boosting market sentiment.
At midday, both the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posted marginal gains, while blue-chip stocks showed a slight deceleration and small caps held steady.

All 11 sectors of the S&amp;P 500 traded in positive territory, with consumer discretionary stocks outperforming, thanks to a 7% surge in Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>). 
The electric vehicle maker's rally followed reports the incoming Donald Trump administration plans to prioritize a federal framework for fully autonomous vehicles. According to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-17/trump-team-said-to-want-to-ease-us-rules-for-self-driving-cars">Bloomberg</a>, the Department of Transportation could soon place this framework at the top of its agenda.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 outperformed both the S&amp;P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday. Trump Rally Fades As Investors Await Powell's Remarks, Bitcoin Drops Below $90,000: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

Investors are growing bullish on the U.S. economy and the stock market, yet also fearing rising inflation prospects following Donald Trump's election win, according to the latest Bank of America's November <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas">Global Fund Manager Survey. </a>
The survey, conducted from Nov. 1-7, highlights a significant shift in investor sentiment after Trump's victory and the likely Republican sweep of Congress.
The results show that fund managers are positioning for a high-growth, high-inflation environment, with bets favoring U.S. stocks, small caps, and the strength of the greenback.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Post-Election Shift: US Growth Expectations And Inflation On The Rise</h3>
The survey found that Trump's victory has dramatically changed growth and inflation expectations among fund managers. Before the election, only a net -10% of respondents anticipated stronger global growth, but post-election, that sentiment jumped to a net +23%—the most optimistic outlook since August 2021. 
Similarly, U.S. growth expectations shot up from -22% in October to +28%, reflecting hopes that Trump's policies on tax cuts and deregulation will fuel domestic expansion.
Inflation expectations also saw a sharp reversal. While October's survey indicated a net -44% expecting higher global inflation, post-election results showed a net +10% predicting rising inflation—the first positive reading since August 2021. Among post-election respondents specifically, 10% expect higher inflation in the next 12 months, up from nearly zero earlier this year.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Less Faith In A "Soft Landing" As "No Landing" Scenario Gains Traction</h3>
Investor optimism about a "soft landing" for the economy—a scenario where inflation cools without a recession—waned post-election. The probability of a soft landing dropped from 76% pre-election to 55%, while the likelihood of a "no landing" scenario, where growth continues with stubborn inflation, surged from 14% to 33%. 
A "hard landing" scenario, implying a recession, remained low at 8%.
With inflation fears on the rise, cash levels, which were elevated before the election at 4.3%, fell to 4.0% post-election as fund managers shifted back into riskier assets.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bullish Bets On US Stocks, Small Caps, And High Yield Bonds</h3>
Trump's win has led to a surge in demand for U.S. assets. Among post-election respondents, 29% were overweight on U.S. stocks, up from just 10% in October—a level of enthusiasm not seen since August 2013.
Small caps, in particular, are getting attention, with 35% of respondents favoring them over large-cap stocks, a massive leap from 6% pre-election. High-yield bonds also became popular, with a net 41% favoring them over investment-grade bonds, the highest level in three years.
When asked to identify the best-performing asset classes for 2025, 43% of post-election respondents chose U.S. stocks as the top pick, followed by global stocks at 20% and gold at 15%. 
For specific stock indices, the Russell 2000, as replicated by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) which tracks U.S. small caps, emerged as the favorite, with 35% expecting it to lead in 2025. 
The Nasdaq 100, at 28%, and MSCI Emerging Markets, at 15%, rounded out the top three picks.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stronger Dollar Expected To Lead Currency Gains</h3>
With Trump's pro-growth policies and potential trade restrictions on the horizon, investors are betting on a strong U.S. dollar for 2025. 
According to the survey, 45% of post-election respondents expect the dollar to be the best-performing currency in the coming year, marking a notable shift from pre-election sentiment, where expectations for the dollar were more subdued.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bullish Catalysts And Bearish Risks Ahead </h3>
The survey asked fund managers to identify the most bullish developments they foresee for 2025, and the answers reflect optimism about Trump's domestic economic policies. 
Post-election respondents named a potential U.S. tax cut as a major catalyst, with 33% citing it as the most bullish driver for markets in the coming year. Meanwhile, 35% pointed to a growth rebound in China—a factor that has consistently been a positive market force in recent years.
Other factors with bullish potential included AI-driven productivity gains (15%) and the possibility of Federal Reserve rate cuts (15%), though these were cited less frequently.
Fund managers remain wary of certain risks, particularly a potential "disorderly rise" in bond yields and escalating global trade tensions. Among post-election respondents, 50% identified a sudden spike in bond yields as the top "tail risk" for 2025, while 30% pointed to the risk of a new global trade war. 
With Trump's administration likely to impose tariffs and adopt a hawkish stance on trade, concerns over strained relations with key trading partners such as China and the European Union are weighing on investor sentiment.

Bitcoin again captured headlines as it surged past $93,000, lifting its market capitalization to $1.8 trillion and fueling a wave of enthusiasm across crypto markets, with Dogecoin up over 12%.
The Consumer Price Index met expectations in October, with the annual headline rate increasing to 2.6% and the core <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41938762/october-inflation-rate-rises-to-2-6-as-expected-december-interest-rate-cut-remains-uncertain">rate steady at 3.3%. </a>
The report alleviated concerns over a potential rate pause in December, driving market odds for a 25-basis-point cut from 58% to 82%, as per the CME FedWatch tool. Treasury yields eased slightly in response to the report.
By midday in New York, all major U.S. equity indices were in slightly positive territory, although with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 underperforming. Leading sectors included consumer discretionary and real estate, while utilities and health care lagged.
In political developments, U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-SD) was elected as the new majority leader in a secret ballot.
The U.S. dollar, tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), hit its highest level since November 2023, marking a fresh one-year high.
Gold dipped 0.6%, on track for a fourth consecutive loss.

Stocks Edge Higher, Dollar Hits 1-Year Peak, Bitcoin Soars To $93,000: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

Investors can breathe a sigh of relief as October inflation data met economists&#8217; expectations, though the annual headline rate showed a slight uptick <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41938762/october-inflation-rate-rises-to-2-6-as-expected-december-interest-rate-cut-remains-uncertain">from the previous month.</a>
As anticipated, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.6% year-over-year in October, marking an increase from September's 2.4% but snapping six straight months of declines.
Excluding food and energy, core inflation held steady at 3.3% for the third consecutive month, highlighting some stickiness in underlying price pressures that remain above the Fed&#8217;s 2% target.
In response to the data, speculators raised their expectations for an interest-rate cut, with increased bets on a 25-basis-point reduction in December. Market-implied probabilities now indicate a 79% likelihood of a December rate cut, up from 58% before the CPI report, as per the CME FedWatch tool.
Following the release, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari expressed optimism about inflation&#8217;s trajectory, stating on Bloomberg TV, &#8220;I have confidence inflation is headed in the right direction.&#8221; 
On Tuesday, Kashkari had flagged the risk of a rate pause in December if inflation data <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/24/11/41919011/feds-kashkari-warns-of-december-interest-rate-pause-risk-surprises-to-the-upside">surprises to the upside. </a>
&#8220;I am not yet seeing a lot of upside inflation risks; the bigger risk is getting stuck,&#8221; he added on Wednesday. 
Markets reacted positively, with U.S. equity futures slightly rising, while Treasury yields and the dollar eased amid increased rate-cut expectations.

Wall Street saw the first surge in risk aversion after Donald Trump's election victory last week, as concerns grew over potential tariffs and trade policy shifts spurred by the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/11/41902202/trumps-china-hawks-rumored-for-top-roles-yuan-hits-3-month-low"> incoming administration's key appointments.</a>
Trump is reportedly considering Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for secretary of state and Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) for national security advisor. Both are vocal hawks on China and NATO, raising concerns of a tougher U.S. stance that could strain key geopolitical and trade relationships.
Adding to the cautious sentiment, investors are bracing for Wednesday's key inflation data release, with economists forecasting the annual rate to hit 2.6% in October.
As of midday trading in New York, none of the major U.S. equity indices posted gains, while small caps underperformed, with the Russell 2000 down 1.5%. Ten out of 11 S&amp;P 500 sectors traded in the red, with consumer staples the only marking tiny gains.
Chinese stocks suffered steep declines, with major U.S.-listed companies falling between 5% and 9% as worries over potential tariffs spooked investors.
The dollar, viewed as a hedge against tariff risk, strengthened, with a currency-weighted index reaching its highest level since May 2024. 
The Japanese yen slipped past 154.7 per dollar, fully erasing gains from the Bank of Japan's August intervention, while the Chinese yuan and the euro also weakened, with the euro falling below $1.06.
Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year Treasury yield up eight basis points to 4.42%, pushing the popular iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) down 1.2%.
The cryptocurrency market also faced pressure, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down 1.6%. Gold dropped for a third straight day, weighed down by a stronger dollar and higher Treasury yields, as it struggled to attract safe-haven inflows.
