What Happened: James Mirfin, global head of risk and identity solutions at Visa, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/07/26/ai-and-machine-learning-helped-visa-combat-40-billion-in-fraud-activity.html">informed</a> CNBC that the company has utilized AI and machine learning to combat fraudulent activities, which have nearly doubled from the previous year.
Visa has managed to prevent $40 billion in fraudulent activities from October 2022 to September 2023, which is almost twice the amount from the previous year, Mirfin said.
He explained that fraudsters use AI to generate primary account numbers (PAN) and repeatedly test them. This method, known as an enumeration attack, results in $1.1 billion in fraud losses annually.
&#8220;We look at over 500 different attributes around [each] transaction, we score that and we create a score –that&#8217;s an AI model that will actually do that. We do about 300 billion transactions a year,&#8221; Mirfin told CNBC.
Visa assigns a real-time risk score to each transaction to detect and prevent enumeration attacks in transactions processed remotely without a physical card via a card reader or terminal.

&#8220;Every single one of those [transactions] has been processed by AI. It&#8217;s looking at a range of different attributes and we&#8217;re evaluating every single transaction,&#8221; Mirfin said.
Visa also uses AI to assess the likelihood of fraud for token provisioning requests and has invested $10 billion in technology to reduce fraud and increase network security over the last five years.

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz Announces Over 97% Of Windows Sensors Back Online After Global Outage

Canadian medical cannabis company Aurora Cannabis Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ACB#NASDAQ">ACB</a>) (TSX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ACB#TSX">ACB</a>) has been granted two licenses by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) under Germany&#8217;s new Medical Cannabis Act (MedCanG).
The company said on Thursday the license grants it continued domestic cultivation, which has been underway for two years now.
Under the new license, the Canadian medical cannabis giant may also cultivate an approved additional product, with plans to expand its offerings to the rapidly growing German patient base.
Additionally, the company said it will also receive a dedicated R&amp;D license, allowing for the trial of up to seven additional novel cultivars at the company&#8217;s local EU GMP facility in Leuna, Germany, which has been operational since 2021.

Aurora Ramps Up Medical Cannabis Production In Germany With Enhanced Licenses To Expand Portfolio

A recent study by Illinois&#8217;s Cannabis Regulation Oversight Office reported that 60% of adult-use marijuana business licenses have been granted to minority- or women-owned businesses. 
This study followed the opening of the 100th social equity-owned marijuana store in the state. Pritzker praised the careful planning behind Illinois' legalization policy, describing it as a model of &#8220;common-sense equity-focused cannabis policy.&#8221;
He also contrasted Illinois's approach with other states: "We wanted to start from the very beginning, trying to get it right."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Economic Impact</h3>
Illinois's cannabis industry has shown significant economic success, generating nearly $2 billion in sales in 2023. A notable portion of these sales is attributed to out-of-state visitors from states where cannabis remains illegal. 
Pritzker humorously commented on the phenomenon of "cannabis tourists" from neighboring states: "People from Indiana, people from Iowa, people from Wisconsin, Kentucky, drive across the border and buy something in a dispensary in Illinois. Now, they're not supposed to drive back over the border to their home states, so I assume they're just staying in Illinois."
Looking forward, Pritzker stressed the importance of federal legalization to ensure broader equity in the cannabis market. "Equity demands that we go at this at the federal level," he stated.

A new study by a UK-based research group, Drug Science, suggests that medical marijuana could help treat suicidal ideation.
The researchers assessed about 4000 patients at the beginning of the study, but observational data was available for 2,112 patients at three months, and 777 patients for 12 months. The goal of the study was to observe the prevalence and correlates of suicidal ideation among individuals seeking medical marijuana based products, according to the <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13811118.2024.2356615?ref=little-big-world.ghost.io">paper</a> published Wednesday in Archives of Suicide Research.
Some 25% of the sample confirmed suicidal ideation at treatment entry and were assessed to have depression and poor overall health. Their quality of life was lower and they had more trouble sleeping. Self-reported depressed mood and suicidal ideation were assessed using items from the patient health questionnaire-9.
After three months of treatment, the prevalence of suicidal ideation dropped from 23.6% to 17.6%. This means that the number of people reporting suicidal thoughts dropped by 25.4% after just three months of treatment with medical marijuana.
Furthermore, depression levels improved significantly over the year, especially for those who had suicidal thoughts at the start. Participants with suicidal thoughts, improved their depression scores by 42%, compared to 37% for those without ideation.

This study does not align with some of the previous findings that suggest cannabis users are more likely to have suicidal ideation. However, it could be that previous studies didn't differentiate between correlation and causation, meaning it has not been concluded if cannabis use causes suicidal thoughts, or if people with such thoughts are more prone to use cannabis.
The Drug Science study suggests that people who feel suicidal are more likely to seek medical marijuana, <a href="https://little-big-world.ghost.io/this-week-in-weed-mystery-cannabinoids-a-dea-record-and-promising-research-about-cannabis-and-suicidal-thoughts/">writes</a> Indispensable's Hannah Harris Green. Additionally, the research suggests that once they are given access to medical marijuana, they might get relief from such symptoms.
Furthermore, previous data have shown that cannabis legalization <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/21/11/23821385/study-cannabis-legalization-reduces-suicide-rates-among-middle-aged-males">reduces suicide rates among middle-aged males</a>. "Critics of marijuana legalization point to studies showing correlations between heavy cannabis use and suicide, depression, and mental health disorders. The initial public offering target for Bill Ackman&#8216;s U.S. investment fund, Pershing Square USA, has been drastically reduced by as much as 90%. This comes as the CEO&#8217;s comments are disavowed by the fund.
What Happened: Ackman, a prominent billionaire hedge fund manager, has cut the fundraising goal for the IPO of his U.S. investment fund, Pershing Square USA, by up to 90%, the Financial Times <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/c4b4f63e-81cc-4902-874c-75a1a0baa28c">reported</a> on Thursday. The initial target of $25 billion has been significantly reduced.
In a letter filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ackman stated that he anticipates raising between $2.5 billion and $4 billion, with the possibility of increasing to $10 billion based on marketing efforts.
In a letter to investors in his Pershing Square holding company sent on Wednesday, Ackman urged, &#8220;This is a moment when you can be very helpful to Pershing Square by participating in the PSUS offering and giving your order to the banks, the sooner the better.&#8221;

Not only did the company lose <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/23/peloton-pton-earnings-q4-2023.html?utm_source=flipboard&amp;utm_content=CNBC%2Fmagazine%2FBusiness">68 cents</a> per share in the fourth quarter, 30 cents more than analyst expectations, it also lost <a href="https://investor.onepeloton.com/static-files/3f464ec7-507f-47e2-a5ae-45c35feb1711">$3.64</a> a share for the entire fiscal year. While that&rsquo;s down from $8.77 a year earlier, the writing is on the wall: PTON is no longer a manufacturer of fitness products but a provider of online fitness classes.
There&rsquo;s nothing wrong with that, but it&rsquo;s hardly a wide moat.
That&rsquo;s not to say you can&rsquo;t make money on fitness and exercise stocks. But you have to be very selective about the companies you choose to buy. Pass on Peloton and consider some alternatives.
Here are three fitness stocks that give you a shot at above-average investment returns over the long haul.
<h2>BRP (DOOO)</h2>

Some fitness purists probably don&rsquo;t consider BRP (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/dooo-stock-quote/">DOOO</a>) a fitness stock, but I don&rsquo;t think there&rsquo;s any question: Plenty of athletic people use the powersports products it sells. And some of them probably sweat a little while using them.
Whatever you think, you will make money owning this stock over the long haul. In 2021, the stock traded over $100. It can get back to triple digits.
Analysts believe that too.
Of the <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/dooo/analystestimates">17</a> covering DOOO, 15 gave it an Overweight or Buy rating, with an average target price of $103.59 &mdash; 38% higher than where the stock is currently trading.
I&rsquo;m writing this in the evening before it reports Q2 2024 results on Sept. 7. I suggest buying some shares should the stock drop on the news. Long-term, the company&rsquo;s side-by-side (SSV) and all-terrain (ATV) vehicles will continue to gain market share. And its Sea-Doo and Ski-Doo products never get old with outdoor enthusiasts.
<h2>Acushnet Holdings (GOLF)</h2>

Golf stocks went a little wild during the pandemic as people looked for ways to exercise without coming in contact with too many people.
Acushnet Holdings (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/golf-stock-quote/">GOLF</a>), the maker of Titleist, FootJoy, Vokey Design, Scotty Cameron and Pinnacle golf equipment and balls certainly benefited. Between March 2020 and November 2021, its shares increased by 162%. Since then, its stock has had plenty of peaks and valleys.
In February, Acushnet <a href="https://www.acushnetholdingscorp.com/investors/news/news-details/2023/Acushnet-Holdings-Corp.-Acquires-Club-Glove-Brand-The-Performance-Leader-in-Golf-Travel/default.aspx">acquired</a> the Club Glove brand of golf travel equipment. Based in California, its golf travel bags have become the industry leader. Acushnet makes golf bags. Now, the company can say it makes the travel bags to get your clubs safely overseas for a round or two on one of Britain&rsquo;s finest.
In August, GOLF <a href="https://s21.q4cdn.com/797008351/files/doc_financials/2023/q2/Acushnet-Holdings-2Q2023-News-Release.pdf" target="_blank">reported</a> solid Q2 2023 results, with sales up 6.4% year-over-year, excluding currency, and a 12.3% jump in net income. Its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin in the second quarter was 19.2%, 300 basis points higher than a year earlier.
As a result, it expects 2023 sales of $2.38 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $365 million at the midpoint of its outlook.
Jefferies analyst Randal Konik <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-21/titleist-owner-seen-rising-50-in-next-year-on-golf-club-demand">upgraded</a> the company in August to Buy with a $84 target price, $23 higher than his previous price.
Bloomberg reported that Konik said, &ldquo;As GOLF continues to innovate and elevate its club offerings, it is likely to attract a broader customer base and gain market share.&rdquo;
<h2>Shimano (SMNNY)</h2>

If you rode a 5 or 10-speed bike as a kid, there&rsquo;s a good chance it had Shimano (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/smnny-stock-quote/">SMNNY</a>) gears. The Japanese company makes <a href="https://www.shimano.com/en/company/profile.html">bicycle components</a> (including gears), fishing tackle and rowing equipment. You can&rsquo;t say Shimano&rsquo;s not a fitness or exercise stock.
Founded in 1921, its <a href="https://www.shimano.com/en/company/mission-philosophies.html">mission</a> is &ldquo;to promote health and happiness through the enjoyment of nature and the world around us.&rdquo;
Although the company makes rowing-related equipment, it really has <a href="https://www.shimano.com/en/ir/library/cms/contents/Summary%20of%20Financial%20Results%20FY2023-Q2.pdf">two reportable</a> segments: bicycle components (78%) and fishing tackle (~22%), with less than 1% categorized under Others &mdash; really the rowing-related equipment.
The first half of 2023 could have been better for its Bicycle Components business. Sales fell 17.7%, to 205 billion JPY, with a 39.5% decline in segment income, to 42.1 billion JPY.
The big positive is that margins remain solid, it is highly profitable, and it has just 1.3 billion JPY in debt.
Shimano&rsquo;s market capitalization is 2.20 trillion JPY, down 19% from its all-time high in September 2021. Now would be an excellent time to take an initial position. Add to that position if it falls some more in the next 6 to 12 months.
People aren&rsquo;t going to stop biking or fishing anytime soon.

One of the advantages of Uber&rsquo;s e-bike service is that it uses a <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/31/16954842/uber-bikeshare-dockless-ebike-jump-san-francisco">dockless system</a>, which means that users can pick up and drop off the e-bikes anywhere within a designated area. This makes the service more convenient and accessible than traditional bike-sharing systems that require users to return the bikes to specific stations. Another advantage is that Uber&rsquo;s e-bikes are equipped with GPS trackers, smart locks, and electric brakes, which enhance the safety and security of the riders and the bikes.



Due to the company&rsquo;s expansive reach, it is sure to benefit from the continual uptake in e-biking.

As e-biking increases in popularity, Panasonic will most likely benefit from both angles as a both a supplier of e-bike components and a manufacturer of its own e-bikes.
