Joe Biden&#8217;s dismal performance against Donald Trump at the first debate has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/06/39563622/is-kamala-harris-the-answer-to-joe-bidens-shortcomings-poll-hints-at-voter-sentiment-toward-poss">stirred talks of the president being replaced as the Democratic party&#8217;s candidate</a>. A new flash poll assessed debate viewership and voter opinions on the debate&#8217;s outcome.
Biden Vs. Trump &#8211; Approval Rating: Merely 32% of the respondents who watched or read about the debate approved Biden&#8217;s performance, Data for Progress&#8217; flash poll <a href="https://www.filesforprogress.org/datasets/2024/6/dfp_post_first_presidential_debate.pdf">showed.</a> The percentage was a steeper 63% among Democrats.
The June 28 survey contacted 1,011 likely voters nationwide. The margin of error associated with the sample size is ±3 percentage points.
On the other hand, 51% of likely voters who watched or read about the debate approved of Trump&#8217;s performance.
The net approval rating for Biden was a negative 50 points among independents compared to a negative 5 points for Trump. Among Republicans, the net approval ratings for Biden and Trump were at -85 points and +84 points, respectively.

Biden Vs. Trump: The Winner Is&#8230; The percentage of likely voters who said Biden won the debate was a more modest 30%, while 62% said Trump came out on top. Eight percent said they did not know. Ninety-five percent of Republicans and 68% of independents said the former president won the debate, while only 27% of Democrats named Trump as the winner. Sixty-one percent of Democrats picked Biden as the winner.
Biden&#8217;s Age A Pushback? Sixty-seven percent of voters said Biden was too old to be president, while 35% said the same about Trump. The pollster noted that the percentage of likely voters who said Biden was old was almost similar to the responses received before and after his State of the Union address.
Following the debate, 53% of voters said they were more concerned about Biden's age and physical and mental health, up three points from an earlier survey done in late April, while a more modest 42% said they were more concerned about Trump's criminal charges and threats to democracy.
Alternatives To Biden? In a two-way matchup between Biden and Trump, the latter edged out the former by a 48%-45% margin. While Trump&#8217;s vote share remained relatively stable, the number of respondents who answered &#8220;don&#8217;t know&#8221; grew.
The survey also asked voters about hypothetical matchups between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Governor Joshua Shapiro, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Illinois Governor Jay Pritzker, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.)
Harris performed the same as Biden in a head-to-head matchup against Trump, and no other alternative candidate performed significantly better than Biden against Trump in a head-to-head race.
When asked who should replace Biden as the Democratic nominee if he were to drop out, Harris received 39% of the votes, followed by Newsom with 18% and Buttigieg with 10%.

&#8220;AI technology is exceptionally expensive, and to justify those costs, the technology must be able to solve complex problems, which it isn&#8217;t designed to do,&#8221; Jim Covello, the head of global equity research at Goldman Sachs, said in the report.
Covello also criticized the tech industry&#8217;s assumption that AI costs will significantly decline over time. He mentioned Google&#8217;s decision to reduce its AI usage in search after its bot began making strange suggestions as an example.
&#8220;The starting point for costs is also so high that even if costs decline, they would have to do so dramatically to make automating tasks with AI affordable,&#8221; Covello added. &#8220;In our experience, even basic summarization tasks often yield illegible and nonsensical results.&#8221;

Despite Covello&#8217;s skepticism, other experts quoted in the report were more optimistic. 
&#8220;The technology&#8217;s cost equation will change, just as it always has in the past,&#8221; said Kash Rangan, a senior equity research analyst at Goldman Sachs. 
Eric Sheridan, another senior analyst with the firm, compared the initial reactions to AI with those to the iPhone and Uber, predicting a similar acceptance over time.
&#8220;People didn&#8217;t think they needed smartphones, Uber, or Airbnb before they existed. But today it seems unthinkable that people ever resisted such technological progress. And that will almost certainly prove true for generative AI technology as well,&#8221; Sheridan said.

When Mika asked Orman about her concerns regarding the economy at the beginning of the year and now, Orman's response was candid. &#8220;I&#8217;m always concerned about those that don&#8217;t have money,&#8221; she said. Despite reports that inflation has calmed down, she emphasized that many people still struggle to afford basic necessities. "The rents people are paying, the prices they're paying for real estate, their homes, that concerns me."
Orman acknowledged that, on the surface, the economy appears to be doing well. &#8220;It seems like we're doing alright. It seems unemployment's alright, the markets are over the top great, and it's kind of settled in,&#8221; she noted. Inflation War Won? &#8220;Inflation looks beaten,&#8221; said Krugman in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The Bureau of Economic Analysis&#8217; personal income and spending report released on Friday showed that the annual rate of the personal consumption expenditure index (PCEI) came in 2.6%, marking the lowest level since March 2021. The metric is considered the Fed&#8217;s favorite inflation gauge.

Why It&#8217;s Important: Consumer price inflation rose to a high of 9%+ in the summer of 2022 and has been trending broadly downward. The CPI, which was at 3.1% at the start of this year, jumped slightly to 3.5% in March and fell to 3.4% in April. Krugman attributed the spike seen earlier this year to &#8220;start-of-year price resets.&#8221;
One significant factor keeping the CPI inflation above the Federal Reserve&#8217;s 2% threshold is shelter costs. Home prices are not included in inflation calculations because they are considered an investment by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, the CPI does include rents and &#8220;owners&#8217; equivalent rents,&#8221; which estimate the amount a homeowner might charge if they rented out their own home.
Shelter costs accounts for 30-40% of the CPI.
The BLS collects data for calculating the CPI every month, but the rent included is the amount negotiated at the start of the lease, which may have been set well before that particular month. Therefore, economists often regard this number as a lagging indicator.
The inflation number is particularly important, as the Federal Reserve has maintained the Fed funds rate at a 22-year high. A reduction in interest rates could kickstart growth and have a cyclical effect on the economy.
For the stock market, which is rallying due to a sharp spike in shares of select stocks tied to artificial intelligence technology, a rate cut could mean additional gains. Lowering rates is seen as a positive for interest-rate-sensitive companies, potentially leading to a rise in stock prices and a broadening of the rally.
That said, inflation truthers such as Peter Schiff have warned that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/05/38840668/gold-bull-peter-schiff-says-inflation-headed-far-higher-as-powell-refuses-to-acknow">inflationary pressure will reignite in the near- to medium-term.</a>
The iShares TIPS Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TIP#NYSE">TIP</a>), an ETF tracking the investment results of an index composed of inflation-protected U.S. Treasury bonds, ended Friday&#8217;s session down 0.31% at $106.78, according to <a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/lxquj26b2sag">Benzinga Pro data.</a>

A recent Credit Karma study shows that 29% of Americans experience money dysmorphia, and the problem is much greater for younger generations. About 43% of Gen Z and 41% of Millennials experience money dysmorphia, compared to 25% of Gen X and 14% of Boomers.&nbsp;
Elizabeth Ayoola, a personal finance writer at NerdWallet, told HuffPost that those with money dysmorphia often view their finances subjectively rather than objectively. This skewed perception can manifest in several ways:

<li>Saving excessively: Some people may save excessively because they feel they are falling behind their peers.</li>
<li>Overspending: This becomes a problem for people who feel they are more financially secure than they are. </li>
<li>Strong emotional reactions: Experiencing anxiety, sadness, frustration, or unworthiness when confronted with friends' financial milestones can be a sign of money dysmorphia, especially when it leads to unnecessary spending. </li>
<li>Lifestyle choices: People may live lifestyles they can't afford, or conversely, may be financially secure but deny themselves enjoyment because they think they don't have enough. </li>
<li>Obsessive behaviors: Constantly checking bank balances, avoiding discussing finances, comparing oneself to others, and feeling guilty about necessary purchases are common among people with money dysmorphia. </li>

Social media has not helped the issue. When people share the parts of their lives that appear more extravagant, it evokes a sense of needing to "keep up with the Joneses." Seeing the seemingly perfect lives of others can skew one's perception of their finances.&nbsp;
Another reason for many struggling with money dysmorphia is this obsession with being rich. Credit Karma says that 27% of Americans are obsessed with the idea of being rich, and of those with money dysmorphia, 54% are obsessed with wanting to be rich.&nbsp;
Courtney Alev, a consumer financial advocate at Credit Karma, says there are a few ways individuals can overcome money dysmorphia:&nbsp;

<li>Take an honest look at your finances.</li>
<li>Set clear goals.</li>
<li>Make a plan.</li>
<li>Stop comparing yourself to others.</li>
</ul>
"If your goal is to build up your savings," she says, "start by doing an audit of your finances to see where in your budget you can make room for savings. From there, you can schedule automatic payments from each paycheck to help hold you accountable and incrementally increase your savings."&nbsp;

Mary Trump questioned as to why the moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash chose to &#8220;abdicate their journalistic responsibility in service to a man who is an enemy of American democracy and a free press.&#8221; 
The moderators focused on immigration, inflation, Biden&#8217;s age, hostility toward the allies of U.S., and embracement of authoritarian dictators, she said. They did not steer the debate toward Donald Trump&#8217;s 34 felony convictions, his incitement of insurrection and refusal to accept the results of a free and fair election, she added.
&#8220;My uncle is a cruel and fundamentally dishonest man, a criminal and a traitor,&#8221; Mary Trump said.
&#8220;He deserves no praise for lying forcefully or denigrating America with vigor or laying out a dystopian vision of American in which basic human rights are stripped from millions of women just because he did so with crystal clearly.&#8221;
The debate, Mary Trump said, showed &#8220;Biden is a human being who has his off days while my uncle is awful every day.&#8221;

But by not choosing the right stocks to buy, you can be left wandering in the wilderness for an extended period. Below are three stocks you should consider buying today in preparation for a 20% decline in the Dow, which would bring it down to 30,000.



<h2>3M (MMM)</h2>

Shares have offered horrible returns over the last three, five and 10-year time frames and have badly trailed the DJIA.



Yet 3M today isn&rsquo;t the same company it was a decade ago or even last year for that matter. While legal liabilities have weighed heavily on 3M stock in recent periods, the company is looking to settle the claims and may soon have that troubling past behind it. At the same time, it spun off its consumer products division into Solventum (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/solv-stock-quote/">SOLV</a>) and slashed its dividend in half, freeing up much-needed cash.



A streamlined company with fewer headwinds and <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/06/blue-chip-steals-3-top-tier-stocks-trading-at-bargain-prices/">less demand</a> on its financial position is a stock worth considering. The company continues to invest in research and development, an effort that has produced innovative products throughout its long history, allowing it to charge a premium for them. It should allow 3M to grow its top line by at least low single-digit percentages for an extended period.



While that might not sound exciting, 3M is a mature business that ought to help investors through difficult times. And though it cut its dividend, it still pays one that yields an attractive 3% annually. Shares are up 12% this year as a result and ought to provide needed ballast to your portfolio if the Dow tumbles.&nbsp;



<h2>Procter &amp; Gamble (PG)</h2>

It hasn&rsquo;t had the legal woes of 3M and its stock handily outperformed the Dow but don&rsquo;t expect it to act like some artificial intelligence-driven tech stock.



Procter &amp; Gamble is also a mature business that provides for the everyday needs of consumers. It&rsquo;s what makes the consumer products giant such a good stock to own. Because its products are consumables, people need to return again and again to buy them. This sort of <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/05/stock-market-crash-alert-3-must-buy-blue-chip-stocks-when-prices-plunge/">forced repeat-trip business model</a> ensures PG stock sees continuous, steady growth.



Owning a portfolio of name-brand goods also means consumers understand the quality they will find when buying. In times of turmoil, they can choose its products knowing what they will get. Like 3M, it can also charge a premium, though that will admittedly work against it in high inflation periods like we&rsquo;re in now.



Procter &amp; Gamble also has a long history of paying a dividend. In fact, it has paid a dividend <a href="https://pginvestor.com/financial-reporting/press-releases/news-details/2024/PG-Declares-Dividend-Increase/default.aspx#:~:text=CINCINNATI%2D%2D(BUSINESS%20WIRE)%2D%2D,15%2C%202024%20to%20Common%20Stock">every year since 1890</a> and has increased the payout for 68 consecutive years, making it a Dividend King. But unlike the industrial conglomerate, there are no outsized claims against its free cash flow (FCF). Although its FCF payout ratio has risen to 65%, it is well within its historical norms and remains secure.



<h2>Coca-Cola (KO)</h2>

It has made a payout since the 1920s and began a campaign of <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/02/7-dividend-stocks-every-investor-should-own-to-survive-a-market-crash-2/">continuous annual increases</a> beginning in 1967. With its 57-year history of dividend hikes, the beverage stock has grown the dividend at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8% for the past decade. The payout yields 3.1% annually. Coke also <a href="https://investors.coca-colacompany.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1102/board-of-directors-of-the-coca-cola-company-approves-62nd">announced a new increase</a> earlier this year of 5.4%.&nbsp;



Coca-Cola is, not surprisingly, the most valuable food and beverage brand globally. Yet it has invested heavily in other non-carbonated categories for years. Today it also owns juices, tea, water and energy drinks, all with significant market share in their respective fields. They also possess greater growth potential than soda.



Still, a can of soda can be seen as an affordable splurge in tough times, which is why Coke holds up so well during recessions. The DJIA plunging 20% would likely signal the start of a new dark period making the beverage stock a powerful addition to your portfolio.

Wall Street loves winners. They enjoy backing stocks that are rising and want to avoid stocks that are falling. Yet rarely do they place a sell rating on a stock.



Whether it is because stocks generally go up over time and a rising tide lifts all boats, or they don&rsquo;t want to miss out on potential fees earned from dealing with a stock sale or other corporate transaction, investors are rarely told to sell any stocks. Out of the thousand of companies that trade on the NYSE or Nasdaq stock exchanges only a few dozen companies earn the distinction of having a sell rating.



That&rsquo;s where <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/05/contrarian-bets-3-stocks-wall-street-hates-that-you-should-love/">being a contrarian investor</a> can generate substantial wealth. By fishing in the shallow end of the pond, you can find stocks the market rejects. Trading at deeply discounted prices, you can discover contrarian stocks to buy and make a killing when the inevitable turnaround occurs. Below are three stocks Wall Street has turned its back on that still hold enormous potential for dramatic gains.&nbsp;



<h2>Palantir Technologies (PLTR)</h2>

Trading under $26 a share, Wall Street put a &ldquo;reduce&rdquo; rating on the stock. It&rsquo;s one of those instances where analysts want to tread lightly and not outright say sell.



You might want to <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/05/palantir-stock-analysis-should-you-pick-up-pltr-on-the-dip/">dive in head first</a>. Make no mistake, the trepidation around Palantir Technologies is probably related to valuation. The stock isn&rsquo;t cheap. It goes for 188 times earnings and 60 times next year&rsquo;s estimates. The one year consensus price target on the AI stock is $21 a share.



Yet such bloated valuations can occur when a stock is newly profitable. Palantir Technologies only started reporting GAAP profits in late-2022 and has notched six consecutive quarters of being in the black. But having turned profitable, there is no expectation it will reverse course and report losses again.



Palantir Technologies launched its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) last year and customers are flocking to it. AIP can <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/the-20-ai-stock-outperforming-nvidia-why-palantir-could-be-the-next-big-thing-in-tech/">integrate data from across organizations</a>, analyze it and package the output into a visually useful product. By the end of 2023, more than <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/02/pltr-stock-forecast-get-ready-for-another-year-of-dramatic-growth/">560 companies had signed on</a>. This achieved for Palantir Technologies in one quarter what it thought would take at least a year to complete.



Not all analysts think investors should sell. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives is the closest thing we have to a <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/the-20-ai-stock-outperforming-nvidia-why-palantir-could-be-the-next-big-thing-in-tech/">permabull on PLTR stock</a> and he calls it the &ldquo;Messi of AI,&rdquo; referring to the soccer great. That may be some hyperbole, but it underscores the potential the company holds.



<h2>Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM)</h2>

Because it tends to be cyclical, Wall Street understands it will soon swing higher. Rating it a sell wouldn&rsquo;t work for the investment banks.



And ADM is cheap. Unlike Palantir the agriculture stock goes for 10 times trailing earnings and estimates. Also, it trades at a fraction of its sales and a bargain-basement 5x the free cash flow (FCF) it produces. Analysts even have a target price implying 12% upside in Archer-Daniels-Midland stock.



So why the sell &mdash; er, reduce &mdash; rating? Commodity prices have plunged from their post-pandemic peak. Even though consumer prices remain elevated, they are well below their 40-year historical highs. A commodities stock amid <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/06/blue-chip-steals-3-top-tier-stocks-trading-at-bargain-prices/">sliding prices</a> causes consternation amongst analysts.



Yet, the company is moving into new verticals to minimize the volatility in its stock. ADM is expanding its human, pet and animal nutrition business. After a series of mishaps at one of its plants that shut it for most of last year, the facility reopened. Therefore, Archer-Daniels-Midland should soon be swinging higher once more.



<h2>Solventum (SOLV)</h2>

It is one of the largest providers of sterilization devices, dressings, tapes and other consumables used by healthcare facilities.&nbsp;



Solventum had approximately $8.2 billion in 2023 sales and operates in four business segments. Those include medical surgical, dental solutions, health information systems and purification/filtration. Sales were up in the first quarter as its medical surgical business gained traction. Yet, the stock has lost half its value since being set free.



Undoubtedly the <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/05/divide-and-conquer-3-stock-spinoffs-set-to-trounce-the-market/">heavy debt 3M saddled Solventum with</a>, some $8.3 billion, plays into Wall Street&rsquo;s reduce rating. However, management says it is determined to pay that amount down over the next two years.



At just nine times earnings estimates, the stock is being discounted by the market. Even the consensus analyst price of almost $66 a share envisions 22% upside in the stock. Thus, investors will want to get in on this contrarian stock to buy before Wall Street wisens up.

Hence, 151,000 fixed wireless net additions were made in the business segment, the&nbsp;biggest&nbsp;quarterly performance ever.
