New York Governor, Attorney General Ask Three Pharmacy Operators' Commitment Over Abortion Drug Access

  • New York government officials Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James have sent a letter to CVS Health Corp CVSWalgreens Boot Alliance Inc WBA, and Rite Aid Corp RAD asking to make abortion medication available in their retail and mail-order pharmacies across New York State.
  • The letter asked the companies to write within ten business days about their commitment to dispense mifepristone at U.S. drug regulator-certified pharmacy locations and via mail in the state.

  • The letter follows Walgreens' statement that it would not dispense abortion pills in the states of 20 Republican attorneys general acting out of an abundance of caution amid a shifting policy landscape.
  • In a follow-up statement, however, Walgreens said it planned to dispense mifepristone in any jurisdiction where it was legally permissible.
  • In May 2022, Governor Hochul announced a $35 million investment to support abortion providers in New York.
  • University of Colorado study estimated that a national abortion ban could increase maternal mortality rates by as much as 24%.
  • Governor of California Gavin Newsom said California wouldn't be doing business with Walgreens Boots Alliance or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women's lives at risk.
