South Korea found a unique and peculiar application for the emerging but powerful artificial intelligence technology — estimating the weight of North Korea’s secretive ruler, Kim Jong Un.
What Happened: AI put the North Korean leader’s weight at over 308 lbs (140 kilograms), according to Reuters, who cited a South Korean lawmaker, while a 2018 report from Daily Mail puts his height at 5 foot 5 inches.
Kim’s health is shrouded in mystery, mainly due to North Korea’s tight lid on state secrets, but recurring rumors about his health have been swirling due to his visibly increasing weight, smoking habits, and the family’s predisposition to cardiovascular issues, Reuters said.
Yoo Sang-bum, a member of South Korea’s parliamentary intelligence committee, pointed out after a National Intelligence Service briefing, “During his public appearance on May 16, Kim seemed fatigued and showed prominent dark circles around his eyes. An AI analysis estimates that he weighs over 140 kilograms.”

Adding another layer of concern, Yoo indicated that Kim, believed to be 39, might be battling a severe case of insomnia.
While North Korean state media is infamously guarded about their leader’s health, a newspaper article from March did offer a glimpse into Kim’s life. The Rodong Sinmun reported that Kim frequently works until the early morning hours, suggesting a likely cause for his alleged insomnia.
Kim’s health has always been a topic of international interest, given his position as the third-generation hereditary leader of North Korea. He came to power following his father’s, Kim Jong Il’s, death in 2011 from a heart attack.
Yoo also shared that South Korea’s intelligence agency is keeping a close eye on Kim’s potential escalating addiction to alcohol and cigarettes, which might be contributing to his insomnia.
