The Trump Organization, which is privately owned by President Donald Trump, recently filed a new trademark for several cryptocurrency and NFT-related items. Here's a look at what the move means and how Trump could be betting on the future growth of the metaverse.

What Happened: Trump is not new to the world of cryptocurrency and NFTs. The president changed his previous bearish stance on cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin BTC/USD ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The cryptocurrency community latched onto Trump in the 2024 election with a bet that he would bring a more pro-crypto-friendly atmosphere to the White House.

Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin soared to new all-time highs after his November 2024 election win. Trump's White House administration has favored cryptocurrency, including ending legislation from the old SEC against several crypto-related companies.

Trump, who has already launched NFTs and his own meme coin, could launch more cryptocurrency-related programs soon. A trademark shared on X by trademark attorney Josh Gerben shows the Trump Organization filing for several items.

"The filing states the company intends to offer:
– A Trump-branded metaverse
– A platform for trading NFTs and cryptocurrencies so long as they are ‘authorized by the 45th and 47th President of the US," Gerben tweeted.

Gerben said the trademarks cover the following items:

  • Providing the ability to exchange digital goods and cryptocurrencies using only those images, texts, videos and sound files authorized by the 45th and 47th president of the U.S. and authenticated by NFTs
  • Providing virtual TRUMP-branded clothing, shoes, and hats for avatars in virtual environments, including a virtual TRUMP-branded restaurant
  • Providing virtual TRUMP-branded training services in the fields of public service, business, civics, fundraising, real estate, construction and hospitality management

The trademark filing has several pieces to it including the potential launch of a Trump-themed metaverse with virtual goods like virtual avatars and clothing. This means the metaverse could sell items like digital "Make America Great Again" hats in the future.

The wording of an NFT trading platform could suggest more NFTs are coming from the president or this could become the official trading platform for Trump's existing NFT collections which began in December 2022.

Gerben said the irony of the trademark filing is that it comes when the president has put pressure on employees at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to resign and return to the office in some cases, which could delay trademark approvals.

Why It's Important: While trademark filings can be done in case of potential launches, the last trademark from Trump involving cryptocurrency ended up being brought to life.

In November 2024, Benzinga reported on a trademark filed by Trump Media & Technology Group DJT for TruthFi. The company later announced in January 2025 that it was launching Truth.Fi with cryptocurrency investments and financial products.

Trump launched his first NFT collection in December 2022 with a collection of 45,000 NFTs minted on the Polygon network MATIC/USD available for $99 each with a credit card or Ethereum ETH/USD.

The collection sold out and later exchanged hands at a premium on the secondary market often seeing spikes related to Trump events and his presidential run. Trump also released subsequent NFT collections in April 2023, December 2023 and later in 2024.

With various collections, Trump could offer a marketplace for existing collections or launch new collections.

Shortly before his inauguration as president in January 2025, Trump launched the Solana SOL/USD-based meme coin TRUMP TRUMP/USD. While the meme coin has dropped in value, the president could utilize the crypto as a payment option inside his future metaverse.

Time will tell if Trump's metaverse comes to life, but based on past trademark filings and his growth of influence in the cryptocurrency community, it would be hard to bet against the trademarks being foreshadowing.
