Shares of Walgreens Company WAG fell about 0.2% after the company reported a 5.6% rise in its May same-store sales. Walgreens total May sales jumped 7% to $6.08 billion. Analysts were expecting same-store sales to increase 4.9%. Walgreens' total front-end sales surged 5.5% in May, while comparable store front-end sales climbed 3.6%. Walgreens' May pharmacy sales surged 7.8%, while comparable pharmacy sales rose 6.7%.
Shares of American Woodmark Corporation AMWD rose about 17.7% after the company posted a quarterly net loss of $3.4 million, or $0.24 per share, versus a net loss of $1.5 million, or $0.11 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding non-recurring items, AMWD's net loss came in at $2.6 million, or $0.18 per share. American Woodmark's net sales climbed 10% to $124,230,000. However, analysts expected American Woodmark to post a loss of $0.21 per share on revenue of $121.62 million. American Woodmark also announced a quarterly cash dividend of $0.09 per share.
Shares of Newell Rubbermaid Inc NWL dropped about 13% after the company lowered its 2011 projections. Newell Rubbermaid now expects 2011 core sales growth in the range of 3% to 4%. The company now projects a full-year adjusted profit to be in the range of $1.60 to $1.67 per share, down its previous forecast of $1.67 to $1.70 per share. However, analysts expected 2011 earnings of $1.69 per share.
