KC Chiefs Receiver Marquise Brown Opens Private Equity Real Estate Firm – Why Now Is The Golden Time

The story of former NFL football players going broke after retirement is so well-worn that it no longer comes as a surprise to see former all-stars fall on hard times. Kansas City Chiefs star Wide Receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown is taking a bold step to change that unfortunate trend. Brown cofounded a real estate firm, Pro Platinum Capital, which will focus on luxury real estate in coastal locations.

Brown's entry into real estate was spurred on by his wife, who comes from a family of real estate investors. Brown told Bisnow that by the time he met his wife, he had already worked with several different financial advisors without being overly satisfied with any of them. He also noted that many of his contemporaries in the NFL had similar issues.

Brown also said that more players don't get involved in real estate because of how investment opportunities are brought to them. He said many of his fellow pro athletes are exposed to financial advisors who only get paid when players buy traditional investment offerings. However, they don't get paid commissions for alternative investments, leading to many players being unaware of the wealth-building potential of real estate investing.

Another problem Brown highlighted is that some players wait until their second contract, usually larger than the first, to begin investing. Brown says this is a problem for two reasons. One, NFL contracts are non-guaranteed, which means you may not get the full value even if you get a second contract. Two, most players don't last long enough to sign a second contract.

By contrast, real estate investing can help players build passive income while playing and Brown has already identified a market niche he'd like to serve. Like many NFL players, Brown enjoys vacationing in luxurious enclaves in exotic locations. His first project with Pro Platinum Capital is a 10-unit resort in the Virgin Islands and another in the Bahamas.

In addition to the income potential, Brown likes the tangible nature of real estate projects. He told Bisnow, "I can go look at it, I can go see what’s going on and you can still be hands-on. That was just something that attracted me and many other people as well." That aspect of real estate investing has a strong pull for many investors.

Brown's main priority is still the NFL, but he's dedicated to his new venture for more reasons than mere financial gain. He sees creating wealth-building opportunities in real estate for his fellow players as a way to pay it forward. Brown said, "I owe it to the game. I got pulled aside by many retired NFL legends talking to me about what they should have done differently, what they wish they did."
