If You Bought Welltower Stock 10 Years Ago

The company's stock traded at approximately $72.43 per share 10 years ago. If you had invested $10,000, you could have bought roughly 138 shares. Currently, shares trade at $137.01, meaning your investment's value could have grown to $18,916 from stock price appreciation alone. However, Welltower also paid dividends during these 10 years.

Welltower's dividend yield is currently 1.96%. Over the last 10 years, it has paid about $31.69 in dividends per share, which means you could have made $4,375 from dividends alone.

Summing up $18,916 and $4,375, we end up with the final value of your investment, which is $23,291. This is how much you could have made if you had invested $10,000 in Welltower stock 10 years ago. This means a total return of 132.91%. However, this figure is significantly less than the S&P 500 total return for the same period, which was 226.15%.

What Could The Next 10 Years Bring?

Welltower has a consensus rating of "Overweight" and a price target of $98.91 based on the ratings of 28 analysts. The price target implies a nearly 28% potential downside from the current stock price.

On Oct. 28, the company announced its Q3 2024 earnings, posting an FFO of $1.11 compared to the consensus estimate of $1.04 and revenues of $2.06 billion compared to the consensus of $1.97 billion, as reported by Benzinga.

The company provided its outlook for fiscal 2024. Net income attributable to common stockholders guidance has been revised to $1.75 to $1.81 per diluted share from the previous range of $1.52 to $1.60 per diluted share. The company increased the guidance range of full-year normalized FFO attributable to common stockholders to $4.27 to $4.33 per diluted share from the previous range of $4.13 to $4.21 per diluted share.

Given the expected downside potential of nearly 28%, growth-focused investors may not find Welltower stock attractive. Given its modest dividend yield of 1.96%, the stock isn't likely to appeal to income-focused investors either.
