General Motors Recalls Nearly 900K Trucks, SUVs Over Engine Malfunction

General Motors Co. GM recalled over 877,000 vehicles with the 6.2-liter V8 engine due to possible defects. The company has also issued a stop-sale order for the affected models.

What Happened: The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had launched a probe into the engine after the agency received multiple complaints of engine failure. While the investigation is still ongoing, GM has issued the recall, reported Car and Driver on Tuesday.

GM says the issue stems from defects in the engine's crankshaft and connecting rods. All engines will be inspected by the company and will be repaired or replaced should there be any defects.

The company says the affected models — all manufactured from 2021-2024 — include the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. Chevrolet models like the Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Suburban, and Chevrolet Tahoe are also recalled. The list also includes the GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, as well as Yukon XL.

GM did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.

Why It Matters: The news comes in during an uncertain time for GM, and the U.S. auto sector at large, amid the rising U.S.-China trade tensions. Experts have suggested that companies like GM could stand to lose billions of dollars due to the auto tariffs.

GM, along with Ford Motor Co. F, also faces the risk of getting a negative rating, according to a report published by ratings agency S&P, due to the auto tariffs. However, Donald Trump's decision to alleviate some tariffs could prove to be a boost for GM.

Elsewhere, GM also faces a multi-district lawsuit for allegedly violating its customers' privacy by collecting and selling data without consent, which the company denies.

Price Action: GM Stock currently trades for $47.24 on the NYSE, according to Benzinga Pro data
