Tesla Invites Chinese Fans To Decide Cybertruck's Debut Cities In Upcoming Tour — Even Though It Might Not Go On Sale For A Long Time

Tesla Inc. TSLA is preparing to display its Cybertruck in China, despite regulatory challenges that may hinder the electric pickup’s sales in the country.

What Happened: According to a report by CnEVPost, Tesla is encouraging Chinese individuals to propose cities for the Cybertruck’s debut.

Individuals eager to see the electric pickup in their city have until 6 pm Beijing Time on March 31 to submit their preferences, Tesla reportedly said in a poster.

Why It Matters: While Tesla commenced Cybertruck deliveries in November 2023, its sales in China have been stalled by regulations. In China, pickup trucks are classified as light trucks and encounter more restrictions than regular passenger cars. These limitations include speed limits, service years, stringent inspections, and restricted access to urban areas in certain cities.

Last year, Tesla launched the CyberVault, a charging package inspired by the Cybertruck design, exclusively for the Chinese market. The product, which combined a protective outer box with charging equipment, was an indication of Tesla’s intent to introduce the Cybertruck to China.

Earlier this month, CEO Elon Musk tempered expectations about the Cybertruck’s rollout in China, suggesting that only prototypes might be shipped for display.

Despite the regulatory hurdles, the Cybertruck has generated significant interest in China, with a Tesla shareholder noting the existence of a Chinese Cybertruck chat group with nearly 500 members, all with preorders.
