Washington legislators have approved a bill that would allow interstate commerce among local marijuana companies.
If HB 1159 — approved by the panel on a 6-5 vote — is enacted interstate marijuana trade would depend on a policy change at the federal level, per Marijuana Moment.
"Either a law to allow the interstate transfer of cannabis between legal businesses or an opinion from the U.S. Department of Justice allowing or tolerating marijuana commerce across state lines," reads the measure.

Democratic Senator Sharon Wylie is the bill’s lead sponsor in the House of Representatives.
In related news, the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT) determined in October that the import or export of cannabis-related paraphernalia to or from states where cannabis is legal represents an exception to the federal ban imposed by the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
The federal authorization exemption states that Section 863 shall not apply to "any person authorized by local, State, or Federal law to manufacture, possess, or distribute such items[.]"
