Last Prisoner Project (LPP), a non-profit cannabis justice reform organization, has recently launched a short-form podcast series called "Just Cannabis." The podcast aims to examine the issue of cannabis justice through a series of interviews with directly impacted individuals and advocates.
Hosted by LPP's Director of Impact, Mikelina Belaineh, the podcast uses an intersectional lens and storytelling to shift the cannabis policy reform movement toward equity and justice.
In Season One, Mikelina highlights the voices of women who have been impacted by cannabis criminalization. Despite being the fastest-growing correctional population in the country, women are consistently overlooked by both the criminal justice and cannabis policy reform movements. Listeners will hear from mothers and daughters who have been impacted by the criminalization of cannabis, as well as from advocates like LPP’s Executive Director, Sarah Gersten.
Through sharing these stories, "Just Cannabis" is helping expose injustices that often go unacknowledged and unaddressed. By giving listeners the critical context missing from many of today's cannabis-related conversations, "Just Cannabis" allows the public to learn, heal, and empower themselves to advocate for much-needed change. LPP hopes that "Just Cannabis" will spur the conversations and considerations needed for our country to take a more human-centric, anti-racist, and equitable approach to cannabis policy and its related criminal justice reforms.
The podcast's first episode, "Intersectionality and the War on Cannabis," premiered on Thursday, March 2, with subsequent episodes airing every two weeks. Episode two, "Data and Erasure," featuring LPP Executive Director Sarah Gersten, will be available on Thursday, March 16. Episode three, "Women and Cannabis Incarceration," featuring LPP Partnerships Manager Stephanie Shepard, will air on Thursday, March 30. The remaining episodes, "Through A Daughter’s Eyes" and "A Mother’s Call to Action," will air on April 13 and April 27, respectively.
Mikelina Belaineh, the host of "Just Cannabis", has been working as an advocate and organizer since the age of 18. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 2016, Mikelina has explored innovative, human-centric solutions to mass incarceration. Mikelina is also currently working on their first book, which will explore the intersections of gender, sexuality, gender-based violence, and mass incarceration.
