Gone are the days when cannabis was considered a taboo subject in U.S. society, well almost.
The perception of cannabis has drastically changed in recent years, as revealed by a new study titled "Cannabis Consumers in America 2023: Part 1" by New Frontier Data.
"Cannabis consumers are diverse with users spread across age groups, genders, economic brackets, and political affiliations," said Gary Allen, New Frontier Data CEO. "With 42% of U.S. adults having used cannabis and likely to do so again, and another 15% expressing interest in trying cannabis in the future, acceptance, and receptiveness continues to grow, creating massive opportunities in both new and emerging markets."
Main Discoveries Highlighted In The Report
The study conducted in Q1 of 2023, which surveyed 5,534 participants, found that 42% of American adults have consumed cannabis and intend to do so again. It showed that cannabis use decreased among 18-20-year-olds but increased among those aged 21-25, 40-44, and 65 and over. The most common reasons people gave for cannabis consumption include relaxation and better sleep.
With 94% of consumers reporting improvement in their medical conditions or symptoms after using cannabis, more consumers are seeking it to treat diagnosed medical conditions.
The report also found that flower is still the most popular product at 43%, followed by vapes, edibles and extracts. Gummies are the most common edible at 84%, followed by cookies or brownies.
Some 74% of individuals in the U.S. reside in a state that has a legal framework for cannabis, with 48% of people living where cannabis is legal for adult recreational use.
This comprehensive report, which sheds light on the current state of cannabis consumption, can benefit policymakers, cannabis businesses and consumers alike.
