Cannabis Can Be A Game-Changer For Improving The Lives Of Autistic Adults

Researchers have found that medicinal cannabis could be a promising treatment for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to a study published in Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology. The study investigated the effects of medicinal cannabis on 74 autistic participants, with an average age of 33, and found improvements in their health-related quality of life, anxiety, depression and sleep after one-, three- and six-month intervals.

The study’s findings indicate that using cannabis can improve health-related quality of life, anxiety, depression and sleep without the need to modify the core traits of autism. Simon Erridge, head of research and access at Sapphire Medical Clinics, who led the study, emphasized that additional research is required to fully comprehend the possible benefits of medical cannabis for adults with ASD.

Medicinal cannabis was well-tolerated by more than 80% of the participants.

The researchers noted that medical cannabis could address the limitations of medications currently prescribed to people, such as benzodiazepines and antipsychotics, which have their own range of side effects.

Past research has also explored the impact of medicinal cannabis on autistic children, adolescents and adults. Two studies, one from 2018 and another from 2019, recorded improvements in the quality of life of autistic individuals, especially in terms of depression, restlessness and anger.

While more research is necessary, the recent study provides hope for those seeking support and treatment to navigate a neurotypical world that does not always understand or accommodate their unique needs.
