Internationally renowned American model and influencer Gigi Hadid, along with her compatriot Leah Nicole McCarthy, have reportedly been embroiled in a serious legal incident in the Cayman Islands. The two 28-year-old women were charged with possession of ganja - a term commonly used in the Caribbean to refer to marijuana - after the substance was discovered in their luggage during customs control at Owen Roberts International Airport.
Gigi Hadid Arrested For Marijuana: What Happened?
July 10, 2023, marked the beginning of the incident when a private plane from the United States, with Hadid and McCarthy on board, landed at the airport's General Aviation Terminal. The luggage of the two women was allegedly subjected to a thorough examination by a Customs and Border Control Officer.
During this control, according to what has been reported so far, the presence of marijuana was detected, in addition to paraphernalia used for its consumption, in Hadid and McCarthy's luggage. The small amount found pointed to personal consumption of the substance.

This finding led to the immediate arrest of both women on charges of importing ganja and utensils for its consumption. They were then transferred to the Prisoner Detention Center for processing. Subsequently, they were released on bail, pending a resolution by the Office of the Director of the Public Ministry.
Two days after the incident, on July 12, 2023, Hadid and McCarthy appeared in Magistrate Court, where they both pleaded guilty to the charges and were fined $1,000 each, but no convictions were recorded against them.
Throughout this tumultuous situation, Hadid and McCarthy were reportedly staying in Palm Heights, an exclusive accommodation known in the region for its luxury and privacy.
Cannabis In The Cayman Islands: A Legal Overview
In the Cayman Islands, the legal framework around cannabis is clear and strict. According to the latest report issued by the government, any form of recreational cannabis use, be it smoking, vaping, or eating edibles, is strictly prohibited. However, there is one crucial exception to this rule: the medicinal use of cannabis oil is allowed.
Medical marijuana in the Cayman Islands
In 2017, the law on drug misuse was changed, allowing the medicinal application of CBD cannabis oil.
However, this use is strictly regulated and must be prescribed by a physician licensed in the Cayman Islands. Such a prescription must be part of a treatment regimen for a person under the care of the physician in question.

Cannabis oil, although approved for medicinal use, is only available by prescription in regulated pharmacies within the territory. Buying or selling cannabis or cannabis oil illicitly is punishable as illegal, regardless of its use.
Traveling with cannabis: a matter of borders
Regulations in the Cayman Islands are strict when it comes to traveling with cannabis: it is illegal to import or export cannabis in any form across the Cayman Islands border. This restriction is applicable to all countries, regardless of whether cannabis is legal in them or not.
Although medical cannabis is legal within the territory, it cannot legally cross international borders. Thus, patients cannot transport medical cannabis to other countries, even with a medical prescription, nor enter with it.
