EXCLUSIVE: C-Suite Chronicles - Hawaii's Cannabis Landscape From Farm To Gummy, The Rise Of 'Big Island Grown'

In an exclusive interview with Benzinga, Jaclyn Moore, Pharm.D., CEO and co-founder of Big Island Grown (BIG), offers an in-depth look at the company's origins.

Comprising traditional agricultural farmers, pharmacists, entrepreneurs and legacy market veterans, BIG was established in 2016 when it received one of two vertically integrated dispensary licenses for Hawai’i County. The company creates high-quality cannabis products using locally sourced ingredients.

Dr. Moore's connection to cannabis transcends her professional role. With over two decades of experience as a pharmacist, her passion for cannabis began with its use as an opiate alternative and grew into a respect for the culture and community it nurtures.

Farm To Gummy: Revolutionizing The Agricultural Economy

BIG's "farm to gummy" initiative, a testament to the company's commitment to local agriculture has significantly impacted the Big Island's economy.

By sourcing over 4,000 pounds of local ingredients in 2023, BIG not only supports local farmers but also provides consumers with a unique, locally flavored product. This approach has resonated well with consumers, fostering a strong market response.

“Hawai’i imports 85-90% of its food, making it tough for local farmers to compete with lower-priced international products. Big Island Grown's farm-to-gummy strategy upholds Hawai’i's farming legacy by producing top-grade cannabis medicine,” Moore said.

Inter-Island Commerce: Expanding Horizons

Dr. Moore highlights BIG's pioneering role in inter-island medical cannabis commerce, enhancing patient access to quality products. This initiative bolsters the local economy by expanding job opportunities and collaborations across the Hawaiian Islands, aligning with BIG's mission to uplift the local industry.

“Inter-island commerce of state-regulated cannabis has greatly enhanced patient access to clean, quality, lab-tested products within the dispensary system. The economic impact amplifies as Big Island Grown (BIG) widens its collaborative network of creatives, brands and entrepreneurs to other islands,” Moore noted.

Local Collaborations: A Community-Centric Approach

BIG's partnerships with local entities like So Juicy Hawai’i, Spicy Ninja Sauce and Malama Mushrooms embody its core values.

Moore explained these collaborations emphasize BIG's responsibility in nurturing the island's sustainability and community health, reflecting a deep commitment to local resources and welfare.

Addressing Population Decline And Job Creation

Facing Hawaii's declining population, BIG actively contributes to the social and economic well-being of the community. In 2023, BIG also contributed over $60,000 in cannabis medicine through its Kokua Program.

By developing a predominantly home-grown management team and focusing on workforce development BIG aims to reverse the population decline trend.

As the largest private agriculture employer on the Hamakua Coast, BIG plays a crucial role in local job creation.

With plans to become a recognized employer of choice in a burgeoning industry, BIG is focused on cultivating a skilled, homegrown workforce.

Moore highlighted: “Growth in our company is earned: 63% of directors and 75% of our managers started at the entry-level.”

Challenges And Achievements: A Journey Of Resilience

Among the notable hurdles are navigating a complex regulatory environment and operating sustainably in a remote location. Yet, BIG's accomplishments, like opening three dispensaries within a year and pioneering hydrocarbon extraction stand as a testament to its resilience.

Advice For Aspiring Leaders: Authenticity Is Key

For those aspiring to leadership in the cannabis industry, Dr. Moore advises authenticity and finding a personal connection to their work. This approach, she believes, resonates the most in any industry.
