The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission approved rules for cannabis consumption areas on January 23, signaling growth opportunities for the industry. These rules require that consumption areas be attached to dispensaries, and only customers over 21 are permitted entry.
Notably, medicinal patients can bring their cannabis but food sales are banned within these areas. However, customers can bring or have food delivered and food trucks are allowed outside the premises.
Christopher Riggs, the commission's chief counsel, emphasized the significance of these rules in providing access to cannabis for individuals unable to consume at home.
“It’s going to provide access to individuals who weren’t able to smoke at home. And now they have a place to go to consume cannabis, both medical patients and [other] consumers. So it’s a big part of operating in this market and continuing to grow this market,” Riggs said.
High Prices Limiting Access
Despite regulatory advancements, local media reports high cannabis prices in New Jersey continue to limit access. The cost of cannabis remains prohibitively high, with prices for an ounce of dried flowers often exceeding $500, and an eighth priced around $80.
According to local journalist Chris Goldstein, the exorbitant prices can be attributed to New Jersey's market being dominated by a small number of large corporations, which maintain high prices through their control over wholesale supplies.
Goldstein noted this situation hinders small businesses and new entrants in the market, who are forced to work with these corporate entities.
